Vintage Ad: Original 1965 Ford Mustang Press Kit

As anticipation builds for the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang and the iconic pony car?s 50th anniversary, the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker has decided to release a special piece of memorabilia: the original 1965 Ford Mustang press kit, which has been digitized for our viewing pleasure..

Even the type of body insulation used is listed in the press kit.

Interestingly enough, the 1965 Ford Mustang was available in eight powertrain configurations made up of four engines and three transmissions. The base engine was a 170 cubic inch (2.8-liter) I-6 with a single-barrel carburetor good for 101 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. The six-cylinder was backed by a three-speed manual transmission, while a four-speed manual and three-speed ?Cruise-O-Matic? automatic were available.

The 164-hp, 258 lb-ft 260 cubic inch (4.3-liter) V-8 with a two-barrel carburetor was the entry-level eight-cylinder engine, which was available with the three-speed manual or automatic, but not the four-speed manual. For those looking for more power, a 289 cubic inch (4.7-liter) small-block V-8 with two different power levels was available. The base 289 featured a four-barrel carburetor and made 210 hp and 300 lb-ft.? At 0.95 hp per cubic inch of displacement, the high-performance 289 V-8 made 271 hp and 312 lb-ft thanks to higher compression (10.5), a high-lift camshaft, solid lifters, and exhaust headers.

Drum brakes and 13-inch wheels were standard, though 14 and 15 inchers were available as options. The steering system consisted of a parallelogram-linkage with a cross link, idler arm, and recirculating ball-and-nut steering gear.

The 1965 Mustang was available with 15 exterior paint colors and five interior colors. Convertible tops were available in black or white for all exterior colors, while a blue top was available for blue cars and white cars with blue trim. A black or white vinyl top was available for hardtop models in any color.

While the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang is expected to move away from the current model?s retro styling, recent spy shots suggest the next Mustang won?t stray too far from the long-hood, short-deck pony car profile. Just don?t expect the vinyl roof and chrome trim to return.
