Negotiate Your Way To A Higher Salary - Business Insider

The phone rings and it?s a job offer on the line!? You?re so excited that someone is interested in hiring you that all you think of is yes, yes, yes ? YES!?

Then you get off the phone and review your mental notes.? Suddenly you realize that you?ve been low balled on the salary offered. How do you wiggle your way out of a lowball offer?

Nothing sucks more than being deliberately paid less than what you know that you?re worth.? However, you don?t get what you work for ? you get what you negotiate for.? Remember that.? It isn?t your employer?s job to see your worth, that job, my dear, is yours.

Over the weekend a reader sent us this question:

I just received a job offer a few days ago. I verbally agreed to what they offered not personally taking into consideration I have a degree and experience in the field. I don?t start until the 29th. Would it be too late to negotiate as of now?

Have You Signed An Offer Letter?

If not, then I would write an email inviting them to discuss the salary since you?ve had some time to consider the offer. This makes it clear that you have not settled on the offer and need to discuss the salary. You already have them reeled in so this is actually a good time to do this because they are very interested in having you start and perhaps declined the other candidates already. Given the competitiveness of the job market, the high unemployment rate, and the number of qualified candidates for open positions, be careful about over-negotiating.

Research Industry and Real Life Salaries For Your Position

For example, someone who aspires to be a lawyer might think all of them make at least 6 figures.? The reality is that some lawyers are paid as little as $30k and the range can go up to compensation in the $millions depending on the industry.? Do your research about the specific areas within your industry.? If you?re an attorney working for a nonprofit, make sure you?re researching salaries in the nonprofit sector and not corporate transactions.

Get with a few people in your groups on Linkedin.? Ideally, these should be people who are where you want to be.? Ask about going salaries for your position based on your level of experience and education.? This should give you an idea around where you should start.

Make Contact

State that you have had some time to consider the offer and would like to discuss the terms.? Personally, I?d do this via email to make sure that you have everything in writing and avoid the emotions that come with the desire to acquiesce over the phone due to balls required for this confrontation. ? Tell them that you would like to make a counter with the salary of $XX,000 based on your degree, industry standard and experience. Make sure to cite references from salary sites like salary.com and highlight your experience and education that directly relate to the position.

Negotiate:? Ask For What You Want

Here?s a sample adapted from cvtips.com

Dear?.. (write directly to the signatory of the employer?s letter)

Thank you for your letter offering me the position of (insert position here). ? There are a few matters regarding this offer I would like to discuss in more detail.? Specifically, the salary offered for my position.

The salary quoted is $150,000 per year. I regret to inform you that this offer is below my salary requirements which is based on my experience and education within the field.

Based upon my experience and education, I?ve listed a detailed summary of how what I bring to the table fits neatly with what you?re seeking in an ideal candidate contrasted with the salary offered.? (This should be a comparison of your salary, market salary, what they require (job listing and description and your experience and education)

[THIS IS IMPORTANT:? List how your experience and education specifically meet this requirement.? Make sure that you show how your experience directly correlates with their requirements in the job posting and job description.? Each part of your counter offer must be a direct response to the employer?s offer, point by point. The employer must have a clearly quantified statement of your counter offer.]

As you can see, I do bring a wealth of experience that speaks to what you seek in a candidate such as myself.? It is my hope that you will value my time and contribution to your organization by increasing the salary offer to 200,000.?

If they are unable to meet your requirements in a salary then negotiate based on time off or other specifics in the benefits package.? You may be tempted to think that accepting $5k less than what you deserve is no big deal but it is a huge deal!? If you stay there just 5 years with no raise that?s $25k you?re missing out on and even more over 10-15-20 years.? So negotiating a higher salary is a big deal and don?t you miss out on it!

Longtime MMA figure Jeff Blatnick dies

Jeff Blatnick, a longtime figure in MMA as a judge, official and announcer, died after complications from heart surgery at the age of 55.

Blatnick was involved with the UFC from its early days. He was the commentator for UFC 4 through UFC 32, and as UFC commissioner was instrumental in the sport's evolution into the regulated sport we know today. He stuck with the sport as a well-respected judge.

Nick Lembo, the head of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, remembered Blatnick as key to the growth of MMA.

"Jeff will always be a crucial part of the formation and growth of MMA. He was a great judge and even refereed here. Far more than that, he was one of the best men I ever was graced with the pleasure of calling my friend," Lembo said to Cagewriter.

"I just spoke to him last week when he was appointed as a judge by the State of Washington Commission to officiate December 8 for the UFC on FOX Show," UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner said via email. "Very sad. He was one of the pioneers of the sport and was there at the very beginning of MMA in 1993. He was involved in formulating the Unified Rules of MMA and was one of the top MMA judges in the world."

UFC president Dana White also remembered Blatnick by tweeting, "RIP Jeff Blatnick."

Before Blatnick started with MMA, he was a highly decorated wrestler. He qualified for the Olympic team in 1980, but didn't compete because of the boycott. In 1982, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. He fought back to make the Olympic team again, and Blatnick won Olympic gold in 1984. Though a return of cancer forced his retirement, he continued to support wrestling as a coach and commentator.

Sandusky wants his child sexual abuse charges tossed out "and/or" a new trial, saying the statute of limitations had run out for many of the 45 counts for which he was convicted in June. (AP) ? For nearly a year, the young man whose claims of abuse triggered the molestation investigation into Jerry Sandusky was known publicly as "Victim 1."

On Friday, Aaron Fisher put aside anonymity to speak by name about his ordeal, saying he had contemplated suicide because authorities took so long to prosecute the former Penn State assistant football coach.

"Victim means people feel sympathy for you, I don't want that," Fisher said in an interview with on ABC's "20/20." ''I would rather be somebody that did something good."

Fisher first reported the abuse in 2008, but he said the Pennsylvania attorney general's office told him it needed more victims before Sandusky would be charged. Sandusky was not arrested until last November.

The delay, Fisher said, made him increasingly desperate.

"I thought maybe it would be easier to take myself out of the equation," he told ABC. "Let somebody else deal with it."

Fisher, now 18, testified as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial. He, his mother and his psychologist have co-written a forthcoming book about his ordeal. Sandusky was convicted in June of abusing Fisher and nine other boys, and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.

Fisher told jurors that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth the former coach had founded.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Fisher said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven, when he was 11 years old. Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits progressed to oral sex. He said he tried to distance himself from Sandusky, to no avail.

Fisher was 15 when he and his mother eventually reported the abuse to the school principal, who responded that "Jerry has a heart of gold and that he wouldn't do those type of things," Fisher told ABC, repeating his trial testimony.

"They tell me to go home and think about it," his mother, Dawn Daniels, told ABC.

School officials reported Sandusky to Clinton County Children and Youth Services, which began an investigation and brought in state police.

The Associated Press typically does not name sexual abuse victims, unless they identify themselves publicly, as Fisher has done.

Sandusky defense lawyer Joe Amendola, at a legal seminar in Wilmington, Del., said Fisher and other victims were motivated by money, a claim he has repeatedly made.

"These accusers could have financial motives, and they could have been abused," Amendola said. "They're not mutually exclusive."

On Thursday, Amendola filed a 31-page document in the case that is the first step in Sandusky's effort to overturn his conviction, contending there wasn't enough evidence against him and the trial wasn't fair. The post-sentencing motions attacked rulings by the judge, the closing argument by the prosecution and the speed by which he went from arrest to trial.

Sandusky, 68, wants the charges tossed out "and/or" a new trial, saying the statute of limitations had run out for many of the 45 counts for which he was convicted in June. Currently in a county jail near State College, he is awaiting transfer to the state prison system to begin serving a 30- to 60-year sentence.

Fisher and seven other young men testified against him in June, describing a range of abuse they said included fondling and oral and anal sex when they were boys.

The abuse scandal rocked Penn State, bringing down longtime coach Joe Paterno and the university's president and leading the NCAA, college sports' governing body, to levy unprecedented sanctions against the university's football program.

No antibodies, no problem: Researchers identify how mosquito immune system attacks specific infections

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have determined a new mechanism by which the mosquitoes' immune system can respond with specificity to infections with various pathogens, including the parasite that causes malaria in humans, using one single gene. Unlike humans and other animals, insects do not make antibodies to target specific infections. According to the Johns Hopkins researchers, mosquitoes use a mechanism known as alternative splicing to arrange different combinations of binding domains, encoded by the same AgDscam gene, into protein repertoires that are specific for different invading pathogens.

The researchers' findings were published October 18 in the journal Cell Host & Microbe and could lead to new ways to prevent the spread of a variety of mosquito born illnesses.

Mosquitoes and other insects use their primitive innate immune systems to successfully fight infections with a broad spectrum of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, despite the lack of antibodies that are part of the more sophisticated human immune system. The effectiveness of the human immune system is to a large degree based on the ability to produce an enormous variety of antibodies containing different immunoglobulin domains that can specifically tag and label a pathogen for destruction. This great variety of pathogen-binding antibodies is achieved by combining different immunoglobulin gene segments and further mutate them through mechanisms called somatic recombination and hypermutation. While mosquitoes also have genes encoding immunoglobulin domains, they lack these specific mechanisms to achieve pathogen recognition diversity.

The Johns Hopkins researchers discovered a different way by which mosquitoes can combine immunoglobulin domains of a single gene called AgDscam (Anopheles gambiae Down Syndrome Cell Adhesion Molecule) to produce a variety of pathogen-binding proteins. The AgDscam gene is subjected to a mechanism called alternative splicing that combines different immunoglobulin domains into mature AgDscam proteins, depending on which pathogen has infected the mosquito. The researchers showed that this alternative splicing is guided by the immune signal transducing pathways (analogous to electrical circuits) that they previously demonstrated to activate defenses against different malaria parasites and other pathogens. While alternative splicing of the AgDscam gene does not nearly achieve the degree of pathogen recognition diversity of human antibodies, it does nevertheless vastly increase the variety of pathogen binding molecules.

"Using antibodies to fight infection is like fishing with a harpoon -- it's very targeted. The mosquito's innate immune system is more like fishing with a net -- it catches a bit of everything," explained George Dimopoulos, PhD, senior investigator of the study and professor with the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute. "However, we discovered that immune pathway-guided alternative splicing of the AgDscam gene renders the mosquito's immune net, so to speak, more specific than previously suspected. The mosquito's immune system can come up with approximately 32,000 AgDscam protein combinations to target infections with greater specificity."

Dimopoulos and his group are developing a malaria control strategy based on mosquitoes that have been genetically modified to possess an enhanced immune defense against the malaria parasite Plasmodium. One obstacle to this approach is the great variety of Plasmodium strains that may interact somewhat differently with the mosquito's immune system.

"Some of these strains may not be detected by the engineered immune system proteins that mediate their killing. Our new discovery may provide the means to create genetically modified mosquitoes that can target a broader variety of parasite strains, like casting a net rather than shooting with a harpoon," said Dimopoulos.

Malaria kills more than 800,000 people worldwide each year. Many are children.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Calvin A. and Helen H. Lang Fellowship, and the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute.

Men, women have different stress reactions to relationship conflict

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Men and women who are expectant parents have different stress reactions to relationship conflict, according to researchers at Penn State, who studied couples expecting their first child. In addition, recovery from the initial reaction to conflict also can be different for men and women, depending on individual difficulties, such as anxiety, or relationship difficulties, such as chronic relationship conflict.

The researchers found that men's increased stress levels -- measured by the amount of the stress hormone cortisol -- during a conflict discussion depended on the level of hostility the couple expressed. More hostility led to a larger stress reaction for men, but the stress levels of pregnant women during the discussion were not linked to the amount of hostility expressed.

The team also found that recovery from the conflict discussion -- measured by assessing cortisol levels 20 minutes later -- did not differ for men and women with low levels of anxiety. However, men with a high level of anxiety recovered less, whereas women with high anxiety recovered more if the couple had expressed a high level of hostility during the discussion. The same pattern was found for men and women who reported low versus high levels of chronic, unresolved relationship conflict.

"Hostility and negativity in a relationship has been shown to have a major impact on mental health and the future well being of the couple," said Mark Feinberg, research professor in the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development at Penn State. "It is especially important to understand how relationship conflict may affect stress during pregnancy, as maternal stress has been linked to health problems for both the mother and child. And men who have difficulty dealing with stress could end up reacting angrily to future disagreements, which could affect the quality of the relationship, parent-child relations and children's adjustment."

The researchers recruited 138 heterosexual couples expecting their first child (82 percent were married) to participate in the study. In their own homes, the expectant parents separately completed questionnaires regarding their relationship experiences and individual qualities, attitudes and well-being. Interviewers videotaped two six-minute interactions of each couple discussing something not related to the relationship. Next, the couples were asked to discuss three problems in their relationship, such as money and housework.

During the home interviews, the researchers collected three saliva samples from each of the participants in order to measure the amount of cortisol contained within the saliva. They collected the first baseline sample prior to videotaping the interactions among the participants. They collected the second sample after the conflict discussion to examine the participants' reactivity to the conflict. They collected the third sample 20 minutes after the second sample to assess whether cortisol levels had gone back down as they typically due after a brief stressor, indicating recovery from the stress of the conflict.

As expected, the researchers found that greater hostility in a conflict discussion led to increased levels of cortisol, indicating greater physiological stress, for men. The same pattern was not found for women. However, the researchers noted this may be due to the fact that women's cortisol levels are already high during pregnancy.

In examining the participants' recovery to conflict, men with a high level of anxiety recovered less, whereas women with high anxiety recovered more. The same pattern was found for men and women who reported low versus high levels of chronic, unresolved relationship conflict.

The research findings appeared in the British Journal of Psychology at the end of the week of October 15.

"We found that all men appeared to find hostility stressful," said Feinberg. "For generally anxious men, more expressed hostility was also linked to more persistence of this elevated stress. On the other hand, generally anxious women experienced relatively more prolonged stress when there were lower levels of negativity and hostility expressed during the discussion. We speculate that these anxious women, as well as women in relationships in which chronic arguing is a feature, find the airing of differences, even when the tone turns negative, to be reassuring that the couple is engaged with each other. This may be particularly important for women during the vulnerable period of their first pregnancy. It would be useful for couples to understand that they need to carefully balance the apparently beneficial effects that discussing difficult relationship topics had for some women with the apparently negative effects it has on some men."

Campbell's Skillet Sauces At The NYC Wine & Food Festival ...

Lady and the Blog partnered with Campbell?s to launch their new line of Skillet Sauces at the NYC Wine & Food Festival. We did 4 live cooking demonstrations that featured the sauces over white rice.

The premise of the sauces is that it?s a quick go-to option for busy people. It takes only 15 minutes to prepare and is super easy. It can be made in 3 easy steps and there?s tons of room for adding your own flair to the recipe.

This sauce is perfect for me.

As a blogger and fashion designer, my days are filled with events, lots of writing, meetings, appointments and running all over Manhattan. At the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is stand in front of a stove for a long time to cook a full meal for my boyfriend and I. Usually I cook a big meal over the weekends and eat leftovers for a few days. Then, I do quick, easy options like macaroni pie (a Trinidadian pasta dish) and beans with some sauteed vegetables. I have to admit that, oftentimes, I?m still on the computer, even after I?ve gotten home. On these days, my boyfriend takes over and whips something up. Our days usually finish around 9pm so we?re always looking for quick food options.

We did 4 cooking demonstrations in the Kitchen Aid area, within the Shop Rite section. If you haven?t been to the NYC Wine & Food Festival Grand Tasting, consider yourself robbed of a true delight. This festival is for foodies, people who truly enjoy savoring their foods and wines.

I demo-ed the Creamy Chipotle Skillet Sauce with chicken and the Fire Roasted Tomato Skillet Sauce with steak with Senior Research Chef Todd Lyons and Senior Chef Robert Kristof. There are 6 flavors, though. Guests were able to taste the Thai Green Curry Skillet Sauce with chicken and the Toasted Sesame Skillet Sauce with tofu.

I couldn?t decide, between the Creamy Chipotle and the Thai Green Curry sauces, which was my favorite. They were so delicious! Chef Todd and Robert walked me through the preparation of each sauce as I prepared them with their respective proteins. We used white rice but the sauces can be made with pasta, potatoes or any other starch you fancy. You can also use which protein you like.

The demos were so much fun to do and I couldn?t believe that it actually took me 15 minutes to make each meal with the sauce. I asked Chef Todd what would go into making the sauces from scratch. He said it would take over $70 in ingredients and definitely much longer than 15 minutes. I loved that there were bits of veggies in the sauces. These sauces are great for after you put the kids to bed. When it?s just you and your spouse, you can whip this up in 15 minutes and enjoy some time together. One packet of sauce serves 2.

Okay, so don?t judge me but my absolute favorite thing about these sauces is the clean-up. I?m just going to go ahead and admit that I often leave the dishes to my boyfriend. There?s just something so intimidating about a sinkful of dishes! Sometimes, I dread cooking because I dread the clean-up. For these sauces, I literally used ONE pan! Yup, you read that right. You don?t have to cook the protein in one pot, then do the sauce in another. Everything goes in one pan. Here are the 3 easy steps for preparing the sauces.

Add vegetable or canola oil to saucepan and wait until it sizzles
Add protein of choice (chicken, beef, etc) and let cook thoroughly
Add sauce from packet and leave on for about 5 minutes

End of story.

It?s done!

I had such a great time demo-ing (and testing out) these sauces. You can find them in your local Shop Rite in the Prepared Food section and other grocery stores nationwide (they don?t need to be refrigerated!). Click here to check them out, online.

Full disclosure: This is a sponsored post. Campbell?s hired us to assist with the demonstrations and post about the experience. All opinions are our own. This is an unscripted feature.

Medical Malware Rampant in US Hospitals

Medical devices are at risk from computer attacks and malware, government experts say. The problem, in part, stems from fears that updating or modifying existing software could break U.S. Food and Drug Administration rules.

Under the current law, software used to run medical devices in hospitals, once approved, must remain static. Therefore, manufacturers will not install anti-virus software or provide updates to fix security flaws, Technology Review reports.

As is the result with most unprotected computers online, the medical devices become infected with malware. The best hospitals can do to combat it is to take infected machines offline and clean them. That however, can be a time-consuming and labor-intensive process that also makes the device unusable for that period of time.

"Conventional malware is rampant in hospitals because of medical devices using unpatched operating systems,"? Kevin Fu, a medical-device and computer security scientist at UMass Amherst and the University of Michigan, told Technology Review. "There's little recourse for hospitals when a manufacturer refuses to allow OS updates or security patches."

[Remote Hack Could Cause Pacemakers to Electrocute Patients]

The biggest concern, though, is what impact the malware has on the devices and what that means for patient safety.

In one example, malware caused a slowdown in a fetal monitor used to treat high-risk pregnant women. The infected device failed to track or record data, said Mark Olson, the chief information security officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

"Fortunately, we have a fallback model because they are high-risk [patients]," Olson told Technology Review. "They are in an IC unit ? there's someone physically there to watch. But if [a doctor or nurse] are stepping away to another patient, there is a window of time for things to go in the wrong direction."

Grooming a Horse 101 | The Pet Assure Blog

For those who need to learn horse grooming?and for those who are just plain curious!

While brushing and grooming is important for all pets, it is especially important if you have a horse, or if you ride horses for leisure or for sport. Brushing is most important after the horse has been wearing a saddle because grit and dirt can get caught underneath it. Brushing your horse thoroughly removes all the dirt, which makes it less likely for the horse to develop sores the next time you?re in the saddle.

To begin, note what you will need as horse grooming supplies. It is best to groom horses with:

  • Curry comb or grooming mitt
  • Body brush with fairly stiff bristles
  • Mane/Tail comb made of plastic. Plastic combs cause less hair breakage. ?
  • Finishing brush with soft bristles
  • Hoof pick
  • Clean sponge or cloth

Before you start the grooming process, securely tie your horse so that it cannot start walking away. While the order in which you groom the horse is not important, you want to be sure to groom the entire body of your horse.

When cleaning the hooves of the horse, pry out anything that may be stuck to the horseshoe. This is also a good time to check for any injuries or strains on your horse?s feet. Next, use the curry comb to loosen the dirt in your animal?s coat. The proper way to use a curry comb is to use circular motions while brushing. After using the curry comb to loosen the dirt, use the body brush to brush off that dirt and grit from your horse. Next up is the mane and tail. When using the mane and tail comb, if you encounter nasty tangles, use a special grooming spray to help condition your horse?s hair. The finishing brush is the last item used because it adds a nice shine to your horse?s coat.

And then?presto! You now have a clean and glossy horse, along with time to bond with your animal friend.

Do you have a horse? Share your grooming tips and tricks with us in the comments!

Tying our fate to molecular markings

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? A Simon Fraser University physicist has helped discover that understanding how a chemical mark on our DNA affects gene expression could be as useful to scientists as fingerprints are to police at a crime scene.

In a new study, Emberly and his colleagues cite proof that variable methylation, a chemical mark on our DNA, is predictive of age, gender, stress, cancer and early-life socioeconomic status within a population. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) has just published the study online.

Working with researchers at the University of British Columbia and Stanford University, Eldon Emberly studied the variation of methylation over a large group of individuals.

DNA that is methylated in our genomes is known to affect whether genes are turned on or off. Gene expression predicates several attributes linked to our identity, such as gender, ethnicity, age and health.

The trio measured methylation from DNA in the white blood cells of 92 people aged 24 to 45. Emberly's lab helped to mine the resulting data sets for correlations between variation in the chemical mark and variable social, psychological and physical traits in the subjects.

The results demonstrated that those who had experienced childhood poverty had a different methylation level from those who hadn't. This was despite the fact everyone in the cohort had achieved the same socioeconomic status later in life.

That meant that early-life environment had left a detectable molecular mark on an individual's DNA.

The correlation between methylation and gene expression was complex because it wasn't always predictable but there was one connection of particular note says Emberly, an SFU associate professor.

"Variable methylation correlated with variable expression of the gene DDX4, which is linked to certain cancers."

Emberly says this study's discoveries raise interesting questions, as the connection between methylation and some traits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, was weaker than expected or non existent.

"We're now investigating whether methylation variation in different types of tissue is more predictive of some trait," adds Emberly.

Pau Farre, a master's of science student in physics under Emberly's supervision, is doing a statistical analysis of the variability in methylation across tissues.

Euro zone mulls new ways to cut Greek debt mountain

TOKYO (Reuters) - Euro zone officials are considering new ways to reduce Greece's huge debts because delays to reforms by Athens and continued recession have put the target of a debt to GDP ratio of 120 percent in 2020 out of reach, euro zone officials said.

A Greek debt sustainability analysis prepared by the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission in March forecast Greek debt would rise to 164 percent of GDP in 2013 from around 160 percent in 2012 under a baseline scenario assuming the Greek economy would stop contracting next year.

But Greece now expects its economy to shrink by 3.8 percent in 2013, its sixth consecutive year of contraction, boosting its debt ratio to 179.3 percent.

"At the moment it looks like Greece's debt level will rise to well above the target of 120 percent of GDP by 2020," ECB Executive Board member Joerg Asmussen told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

To bring it back towards the desired level in 2020, Greece could organize voluntary buy-backs of its bonds, he said.

The money could not come from the ECB, but it could be lent by the European Stability Mechanism, for example, one senior euro zone official, who was in Tokyo for the weekend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, said.

Because Greek bonds trade at very deep discounts, one euro of money borrowed from the ESM, the euro zone's permanent bailout fund, could reduce Greek debt by 1.5 euros, the official said.

A second euro zone official said that while borrowing from the ESM would in itself increase Greek debt, there was another way to reduce it.

"What could change the overall level of debt is that, at some later stage, when banks can be directly recapitalized by the ESM, we could convert some of the euro zone loans for bank recapitalization into equity and this could help the debt ratio, but this is not going to happen before the end of next year," the second official said.

The euro zone's temporary bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, has already lent Greece 25 billion euros to recapitalize banks, and 23 billion more is awaiting disbursement.

The 48 billion euros would be a sizeable chunk of Greece's total debt, currently estimated at around 330 billion euros.

Greek government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said several options were on the table. "The ECB, which holds Greek government bonds, could satisfy itself with lower interest rates on those bonds," he told the Sunday edition of the Greek Realnews newspaper.

"Or, it could agree to roll them over when these bonds mature. Also, the recapitalization of Greek banks could take place directly through the ESM as is currently being considered for Spain."

Another ECB Executive Board member, Benoit Coeure, said the central bank would not consider rescheduling the Greek debt portfolio it held -- a suggestion repeatedly made by Athens.

The second euro zone official said Athens could also use proceeds from the privatization of state-owned assets to retire debt.

"The privatization process is finally kicking in, the structure is ready," the official said. "You could expect a few billion euros from privatization to buy back debt. This could happen relatively quickly."

The debt sustainability analysis from March estimated Greek privatization revenues by 2020 at 45 billion euros, with 12 billion coming in 2012-2014.

The IMF is pushing for euro zone governments to restructure the debt that Athens owes to them -- almost 53 billion euros lent under Greece's first bailout program and 14.4 billion already disbursed under a second bailout.

The euro zone could also further lower interest on the loans for the first program, which now stands at 150 basis points, or lengthen the loan maturities or increase the moratorium time when interest does not have to be serviced.

But officials said there was little appetite among euro zone countries for a restructuring of official sector loans to Greece.

To help Greece return to growth, the euro zone and the IMF are discussing giving Athens an extra two years to reach a primary surplus of 4.5 percent of GDP, pushing back the date to 2016.

Greece has said two extra years would cost 13 billion to 15 billion euros and officials said the euro zone realizes it will need to come up with the money.

But no decision on the financing has been reached yet.

Aftermarket Leads ? Renault and Caterham to announce tie-up

Renault and Caterham are poised to announce that the firms are co-operating on a road car project that will see the Alpine brand return to the road.

The announcement is expected to be confirmed in early November, and will involve both Renault and Caterham releasing sports cars based on a common architecture.

The deal has been born out of Renault?s successful engine supply deal to the Caterham Formula 1 team.

As well as its racing interests, Caterham also has a Technology business, which took over the F1 team?s previous base in Hingham, Norfolk, when it transferred its operations to an alternative site in Leafield, Oxfordshire

Caterham Technology?s mission statement says, ?for a company whose DNA is rooted in sports car development, it goes without saying that dynamic performance development expertise is at the heart of our service offerings.?

What?s more, the Caterham F1 team?s Technical Officer, Mike Gascoyne, is also the CEO of Caterham Technology, and recently Tweeted ?Back at work in Hingham, road car project team settled in and working on a really exciting project to be announced soon.?

Details remain scarce, with both firms refusing to comment, but we do know that the proposed Alpine sports car will look quite different to the A110-50 concept car (pictured), which was essentially a Renault Megane Trophy race car with a body design inspired by the Renault DeZir concept, first show at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

Jordan: US forces plan shield against Syria

RUSSEIFEH, Jordan (AP) ? From the edge of a steep mountain overlooking a desert compound built into an old rock quarry, machine gunfire echoes just outside hangars where U.S. special operations forces are training Jordanian commandos.

The Americans, who arrived in the kingdom a few weeks ago at the request of the Jordanians, are helping them develop techniques to protect civilians in case of a chemical attack from neighboring Syria, according to Jordanian officials.

On the Syrian border farther north, British military officers recently assessed the dangers of rockets constantly falling on the kingdom and ways to shield the Jordanian population and Syrian refugees as President Bashar Assad widens his military offensive against rebel enclaves in the vicinity, according to Jordan-based Western diplomats.

Jordan's King Abdullah II has repeatedly discussed plans for reinforcing security along the Syrian border and expressed concern over Syria's chemical stockpiles in meetings with visiting Western allies, according to the two diplomats, who monitor Syria from their base.

They said it is believed that Abdullah has also been shopping around for an anti-missile defense system to shield his densely populated capital, Amman ? home to nearly half of Jordan's population.

There is also talk of contingency plans for a quick pre-emptive strike if Assad loses control over his stock of chemical weapons in the civil war. The fear is that those weapons might otherwise fall into the hands of al-Qaida or Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

"There are dangers involved, and we have to ensure the safety of our country and the well-being of our citizens," a senior government official said in the first public Jordanian confirmation of the presence of foreign military personnel here. "We are benefiting from the experience of our allies as we prepare for the worst scenarios."

The presence of some 150 Americans at the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Center northeast of the capital is a clear message to Assad that Jordan's longtime Western allies stand ready to defend the country if it is dragged into the 19-month Syria conflict.

Assad's regime, which is believed to have one of the world's largest chemical weapons programs, has said it might use them against external threats but not against Syrians.

But the Jordanians worry that Assad may use his chemical weapons against his neighbors, or his countrymen, if he felt that his days in power were numbered.

In May, the U.S. held joint exercises with Jordan, nicknamed the "Eager Lion," which focused on the ways to deal with a chemical weapons attack.

On Wednesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said at a NATO conference of defense ministers in Brussels that the U.S. has been working with Jordan to monitor chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria and was helping Jordan deal with refugees pouring over the border.

Although the senior government official insisted that the Americans were "advisers, not troops," two senior U.S. defense officials said most were Army special operations forces. The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly about the mission.

The troops are operating out of a military center near Amman and have moved back and forth to the Syrian border. Their work involves gathering intelligence and planning joint Jordanian-U.S. military maneuvers, one U.S. official said.

The revelation of U.S. military personnel so close to the Syrian conflict suggests an escalation in the American involvement, even as the Obama administration pushes back on any suggestion of a direct intervention in Syria.

The Jordanian official insisted that the kingdom was "capable of shielding itself from Syrian attack," but London-based Mideast analyst Rosemary Hollis disagreed.

"For Jordan, the more unstable Syria becomes, the deeper the crisis proceeds, the more likely Jordan will suffer from all kinds of spillover, but they are incapable of doing anything to intervene to try to turn the conflict in one direction rather than another unless they have the ballast, cover and involvement of serious international forces, which is the Americans," Hollis said.

She also saw the American military presence as a step toward possible future military operations to secure Syria's chemical stockpiles.

Torbjorn Soltvedt, a senior analyst with the Britain-based Maplecroft risk analysis group, said he saw the current situation as a "monitoring and training stage."

"Given the degree to which Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles have been dispersed across the country, an operation to secure them would be extensive and require significant numbers of troops," he said. "The Pentagon has estimated that an operation to secure Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles could require as much as 75,000 troops given the presence of several chemical agent manufacturing plants and many more storage sites throughout the country."

Panetta said that while the U.S. believes the weapons are still secure, intelligence suggests the regime might have moved some to protect them.

Steven Bucci, an expert in chemical weapons at the Heritage Foundation, has told Congress there might be as many as 50 chemical weapons sites in Syria. He said in an interview Wednesday that Syria's stockpile is potentially "like a gift from God" for militants since they don't have the know-how to assemble such weapons, while some of Syria's chemical agents are believed to have already been fitted into missile warheads.

At the desert facility, stretching 25 kilometers (16 miles) on the edge of this predominantly Palestinian suburb, Jordanian soldiers guard the walled compound, where Iraqi and Libyan special forces once received training. They refused to allow reporters in.

Jordanian officials were eager to downplay the U.S. role, concerned about the possibility of raising tensions with Syria and giving the kingdom's largely conservative population the impression that they were allowing foreigners to use Jordan as a potential launching pad for a pre-emptive attack against another Arab country.

The senior government official and two others who discussed the American military role all spoke on condition of anonymity, citing possible diplomatic sensitivities with Syria. Assad is thought to have sleeper cells scattered across the kingdom and plotting attacks on Syrian opposition and Jordanian figures.

Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah, the only official who spoke on the record, said the U.S. presence was part of "routine training exercises."

"Jordan and U.S. forces exchange visits regularly, and the presence of tens of their forces here is part of efforts to expand cooperation, exchange capabilities and protect regional stability," he said in an interview. He declined to elaborate or comment on any link to the Syrian crisis.

Amman has long had bumpy relations with Damascus because of its alliance with the United States ? Jordan's largest donor of economic and military aid ? and its 1994 peace treaty with Israel.

Jordan would like to see the Syrian regime toppled because of growing concern that Assad's key ally, Iran, is trying to spark Shiite uprisings in Arab countries ruled by members of the rival Sunni sect. Assad's ruling Alawite minority is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Abdullah was the first Arab leader to warn in 2004 of the sweep of Iran's "Shiite crescent," stretching from Lebanon through Syria and Iraq.

Jordanian officials have advocated a buffer zone inside the Syrian border to protect civilians fleeing bombardment. There is mounting speculation that Jordan would dispatch highly skilled special forces to secure such a zone when Assad's regime falls to prevent chaos on its border.

In the past six weeks, more than 20 Syrian rockets have fallen on Jordanian villages near the border. At least two people were wounded, including a 4-year-old Jordanian girl.

The two Western diplomats said the Britons, about a half-dozen officers specialized in intelligence gathering and special operations techniques, visited Jordan a few times over the past three months. The diplomats insisted on anonymity, saying that public comment may hamper their information gathering on Syria.

The Jordanian army already has an extensive presence on the border and has been assisting waves of Syrian refugees, who are straining the country's meager resources, mainly health care, water and utilities.

Jordan hosts some 200,000 Syrian refugees, more than any other neighboring country. Some come under constant firing from their army as they cross into the kingdom. Jordanian border guards have been wounded and a 6-year-old Syrian boy was killed in July.

Jordanian men also are moving the other way across the border, joining what intelligence officials have estimated to be about 2,000 foreigners fighting alongside Syrian rebels trying to topple Assad.

State wildlife officials are trying to determine the species of a blue?eyeball?found by a man Wednesday at Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale.

They put the?eyeball?on ice so it can be analyzed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

Agency spokeswoman Carli Segelson says the?eyeball?likely came from a marine animal, since it was found on a beach. Possible candidates include a giant squid, a whale or some type of large fish.

Word of the eyeball has created a buzz on the Internet and in the marine biology community.

An assistant biology professor at Florida International University in Miami on Friday said the blue eyeball may have come from a deep sea squid or a large swordfish. Heather Bracken-Grissom says she started discussing the eyeball with her colleagues as soon as they saw the pictures on the Internet.

Bracken-Grissom says the lens and pupil are similar to the shape of a deep sea squid's eye. She notes that the squid's eyes can be as large as soccer balls and they easily dislodge.

Why would you need a social group to validate that? Plus, I'd say the more intelligent a person is, the less likely they are to simply believe they are. Those are feel-good social clubs.
