WATERLOO, Ont. ? BlackBerry (TSX:BB) confirms it's cutting about 100 jobs this week as part of the second phase of its previously announced transformation plan.

BlackBerry says the terminations were handed out in the Waterloo Region where the smartphone maker is based.

"I can confirm that BlackBerry this week informed a small number of employees of their termination, including approximately 100 employees in Waterloo," a spokesperson said in an email.

"As previously stated, we are in the second phase of our transformation plan where we will be assessing our organization ? from top to bottom ? to ensure we have the right people in the right roles with the right skill sets to drive new opportunities in mobile computing.

The company said its "evolution" was ongoing and "in no way easy."

"But we are realistic about what is required to move our transformation forward in a timely manner. We will be as transparent as possible as our plans evolve."

There were also 250 layoffs last month in BlackBerry's operations in Waterloo.

BlackBerry's board of directors is also exploring strategic options, including a potential sale of the company or some of its assets.
