Hong Kong firm loses $4.9 billion in one day

Thomas and Raymond Kwok, two brothers who control Sun Kai Properties, the second largest property company in the world, were arrested by Hong Kong's Independent Commission Against Corruption Thursday, scandalizing the city. NBC's Ed Flanagan reports.

BEIJING ? If you?ve ever been to Hong Kong, you?ve undoubtedly walked by a building built or managed by Sun Hung Kai Properties, the second largest property company in the world and one of the small number of prominent developers that control real estate in this land-scarce region.

To say that the Kwok family, which controls Sun Hung Kai, has played a part in constructing Hong Kong?s iconic skyline would be massive understatement. Three of the tallest buildings in the city were constructed by the firm as well as one of the region?s more surreal icons, a replica of Noah?s Ark which doubles as a hotel and theme park. (The Kwoks are evangelical Christians.)

So when news broke that the company?s co-chairmen, Thomas and Raymond Kwok, were arrested on Thursday by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), it caused an uproar that has scandalized the city of 7 million and caused the firm?s stock to tumble.

Make that plummet.?

In trading Friday on Hong Kong?s Hang Seng Index, Sun Hung Kai?s stock value plunged 13 percent, for a total loss of $4.9 billion in market value.??

It was easily the company?s worst loss on the market in 14 years, according to Bloomberg News.

Though no charges were publically announced and the Kwok brothers were released late Thursday evening, their arrest at the same time as the reported detention of Rafael Hui, the number two in the Hong Kong government from 2005-2007,?has some speculating that the arrests were related.

If so, the arrests one again underscore the tight relationship between Hong Kong?s government and local property developers, both of whom are in a perpetual race to keep up with the housing demands in the world?s most densely populated city.

Mercurial rise not without its issues
With an estimated holdings of $18.3 billion dollars, the Kwok family is listed as the 27^th wealthiest family in the world, according to Forbes Magazine. Their company, which was founded in 1963 by family patriarch, Kwok Tak Seng, has risen to prominence by breaking into every facet of the property business, from residential to hotels to industrial development.

By the end of 2011, Sun Hung Kai was reported to have a land bank of 46.7 million square feet of gross floor area either completed or in development. The group also owns 26 million square feet of farmland in Hong Kong?s New Territories that is in the process of receiving planning permission to be converted to building land.?

That translates into an astounding amount of property under Sun Hung Kai?s control in a city where land is extremely precious.?

The company and the family have also long been in the spotlight in Hong Kong. When the family patriarch died in 1990, he left the reins to his eldest son Walter, who became chairman and chief executive. In 1997, Walter was kidnapped and held for a week before his family paid a ransom of more than $77 million to have him released.

Walter returned to the company after his release, but eventually the family relationship unraveled when Thomas and Raymond Kwok dethroned Walter in 2008.

With the support of their mother, the two brothers charged Walter with being unfit to run the business and after a nasty struggle, eventually took over. Thomas, 60, runs the construction of new developments and Raymond, 58, is in charge of the company?s finances.??

Are Hong Kong?s business and political interests too close?
The arrest of the Kwok brothers and Rafael Hui by the ICAC comes at a time when Hong Kong is dealing with a number of incidents that bring into question just how transparent and corruption-free the former British colony is today.

On the face of it, the city has a good reputation. The Heritage Foundation calls Hong Kong the world?s freest economy while Transparency International calls it the 12^th least corrupt country and/or territory in the world. (The United States came out 10^th and 24^th respectively.)

But the relationship between real-estate developers and the government has long been a source of simmering tensions in the crowded city. Opposition leaders and some social groups have long criticized the cozy relationship between the government and the developers.

Thousands took to the streets in March to demand that the city?s Chief Executive Donald Tsang quit after he was ?was accused of accepting invitations for lavish yacht dinners and private jet trips from local businessmen.

In elections for the city?s next chief executive just last weekend, the winner Leung Chung-ying, campaigned on a platform of providing more low-income housing in the city.?

Some argue that the Kwok scandal is the next in a storyline of business and government blurring together too closely. However, the fact that the ICAC went ahead with this investigation suggests that for the present time at least, the mechanisms in place to deter and uncover corruption are still strong in Hong Kong.

Where this investigation goes from here will go a long way towards determining whether this latest crisis of faith in Hong Kong is the next step in a gradual erosion of Hong Kong?s autonomy and financial freedom or one that rights it once and for all.

Those of a certain age might recall the fictional Cathy and Patty Lane, identical cousins on The Patty Duke Show, and Hayley Mills as Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers, identical twins separated at birth in The Parent Trap. Two generations later, Lindsay Lohan portrayed Hallie and Annie in The Parent Trap remake (could the judicial system handle two Lindsays today?). Jeremy Irons played Beverly and Elliot Mantle, evil twin gynecologists, in Dead Ringers. And there?s, of course, the Olsen Twins making movies as well. Identical twins, in other words, have long provided a rich vein of entertainment.

The art world also has some famous monozygotic duos, like Doug and Mike Starn of Starn Studio. Right now, another pair of twins are taking the illustration world by storm. Twins are known to finish each other?s sentences and, some say, even read each other?s minds. But how can two individuals produce one piece of expressive art? I asked Anna and Elena to explain their similarities and differences as individually as possible, which, given that they finish each other?s thoughts, is not as easy as it sounds.

When and where you born and how long after did you decide to become illustrators?

Anna: Sorry, we are women! We prefer not tell our date of birth [laughs]. However, we have been working for 16 years, and full-time with the same signature since 1998. Before moving to Milan to study painting at the Brera Academy, we studied graphic design and photography in high school at the Istituto D?arte G.Sello in our birthplace, Udine in the Friuli Region (in northeast Italy).

Elena: We also studied printmaking techniques such as etching, woodcut, engraving, screenprint, and linocut.

Anna: During the summer holidays in Udine, while we were still studying drawing and painting at The Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan, we worked separately as graphic designers with studios and advertising agencies. Upon graduating, we had intended to work as graphic designers in Milan, but in the mid ?90s, advertising and graphics were in crisis so we decided to join the Italian Illustrators Association (as separate illustrators) because drawing has always been our passion since we were three years old.

Elena: We were lucky enough to find an important Italian graphic designer, Angelo Sganzerla, who believed in us and gave us our first commission. From that moment, illustration was our life?s work.

Anna: At that time we had separate portfolios and drawings done with various techniques: watercolor, gouache, acrylic, collage. For a couple of years we worked almost exclusively doing packaging with Angelo Sganzerla. At the same time, we were making appointments with publishers and ad agencies to start careers as freelancers.

Elena: Often one of us would get an appointment to show our portfolio. An hour later, the other one would have an appointment with the same person. This didn?t help us, there was too much confusion. That?s when we created a single identity, but our style still wasn?t clear. Our style and our signature began to form in 1999-2000 with the creation of our first website.

There is no mistaking that you are identical twins. Do you work identically too?

Anna: Yes, we are monozygotic twins. But our personalities are not identical even though we have the same genes! We work together concurrently on many projects with different styles and content. Our personalities complement each other.

Elena: We can divide the tasks without difficulty. If we disagree about something, we can discuss and mediate. At the end of each project we must be agreed and convinced of what we did.

Did your illustration style come naturally to you both at the same time?

Elena: Our style continuously and naturally evolves. We prefer to be free to develop ideas. Interpretation is more important than technique and special effects.

Anna: To improve, it is necessary to experiment and take risks. When we visit an art exhibition that suggests changes in our work, we try to do it at the first opportunity. We do not have a preconceived idea of how we will evolve our work in the next years, but we know that will change.

Your work has a Renaissance sensibility. Does this come from your Italian education?

Anna: Yes it does. We never took illustration classes. Our training is more structured. Upon graduation from the Brera Academy, for two years we continued our studies at the University of Milan in art history, modern literature, philosophy, history?

Elena: I think the study of aesthetics, philosophy and art history, not only ancient but also modern and contemporary art, have been vital in helping us in career choices. In all our work there is a clear reference to artists and paintings.

Anna: It is important to study the history of art and to know the past as well as the present. At the same time it is important to know about new trends and tastes. It is also important be careful in projects choice to keep quality of your work keeps growing.

In your work, who leads and who follows?

Anna: Our style has developed from our collaboration. It is not possible to quantify what Anna has given from what Elena has. It would not be possible to work together if one dominates the other.

Elena: If we are doing many different assignments, one of us usually starts to think how to develop a new project. There is no rule. In all cases we decide together the best route to take.

Anna: Making a book is like making a film. It?s a team work. We always start by talking and imagining what we want the project to be. The choice of scenes we want to illustrate is very important because it allows us to give our own interpretation. Then we conduct preliminary historical research to understand how best to create the characters and setting. There are many steps to arrive at the end, and the work can be divided.

In addition to illustration, do you each of you have other creative releases, something that belongs to only one of you?

Elena: We have very little free time. I love working as a web and graphic designer. I design our promotional image and website.

Anna: I would like to resume my old passion for photography. I?d like to develop a fine art artistic production.

Do you find being twins and partners easy or difficult?

Elena: We think we are lucky, there is no competition between us.

Anna: For us it is as natural as drinking a glass of water. We share the successes but also the difficulties and fatigue.

TORONTO (AP) ? Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. said Thursday that it plans to return its focus to its corporate customers after failing to compete with flashier, consumer-oriented phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.

The shift in strategy came with a management shakeup that includes longtime executive Jim Balsillie leaving the board and severing ties with a company he helped build and later see decline.

RIM said it will focus its consumer efforts on targeted offerings that tap the company's strengths. That includes devices that employees will want to buy on their own and bring to the corporate environment. The company was exploring partnerships and other opportunities for consumer products that aren't deemed central. Those products could include software and features that are then incorporated into RIM's own offerings.

"We can't do everything ourselves, but we can do what we're good at," RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

RIM has had limited success trying to enter consumer markets in recent years, particularly with high-end devices that sport touch screens popular with consumers.

Heins said a turnaround required "substantial change."

"We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling and all things to all people," Heins said. "Therefore, we plan to build on our strength."

Heins, who joined RIM four years ago and was most recently its chief operating officer, replaced co-CEOs Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis in January after the company lost tens of billions in market value. Lazaridis founded the company, and Balsillie had joined in its early years.

RIM said Thursday that Balsillie has resigned from its board after 20 years with the company. David Yach, chief technology officer for software, and Jim Rowan, chief operating officer for global operations, also are leaving.

The company said it was undergoing a comprehensive strategic review. Heins said he was open to selling the company, but "it is not the main direction we are pursuing right now."

The Canadian company has long dominated the corporate smartphone market. Its BlackBerrys are known for their security and reliability as email devices. President Barack Obama even refused to part with his BlackBerry after he took office.

RIM has sought to expand its appeal to consumers, but it has had trouble because the phones aren't perceived to be as sexy as its chief competitors. RIM has been counting on improvements with its forthcoming BlackBerry 10 system, but that has faced multiple delays. BlackBerrys also lag iPhones or Android phones when it comes to running third-party applications. Touch-screen models that lack physical keyboards have largely flopped.

For that reason, BlackBerrys are even losing ground in the business world, as employees demand iPhones or Android devices over BlackBerrys.

Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011 ? more than what RIM shipped in the past three quarters combined. RIM shipped 11.1 million BlackBerrys in the latest quarter, which ended March 3.

RIM also bombed in its efforts to produce a tablet computer to compete with Apple's iPad. Among other things, the PlayBook received negative reviews because it launched without an email program and the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. In December, the tablets that originally cost $500 were selling for $200, below the cost of making them.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said it's a positive development that RIM is going to focus on its corporate clients and lower-end consumers.

"They are conceding the high-end consumer market with all these services that are wrapped around the platform," Gillis said. "At least there's some reality here. Are they going to compete against iTunes? No way."

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said RIM should have recognized that it is niche player and lost the battle with Apple three years ago. Misek said the company should have looked at partnering with other companies last year rather than now.

When he took the CEO job in January, Heins said a drastic change in strategy was not needed. He said Thursday that he changed his mind after conducting his "own reality check on where the entire company really is."

RIM announced the changes as it announced quarterly results that fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Net loss was $125 million, or 24 cents a share, in the fiscal fourth quarter. This compares with $934 million, or $1.78 per share, a year ago.

After excluding one-time items, adjusted income was 80 cents per share, a penny short of expectations from analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue fell 25 percent to $4.2 billion from $5.6 billion. Analysts were expecting $4.5 billion.

For the full fiscal year, RIM earned $1.2 billion, or $2.22 a share, on revenue of $18.4 billion. That compares with net income of $3.4 billion, or $6.34 a share, on revenue of $19.9 billion in fiscal 2011.

In extended trading after the results came out, RIM shares fell 33 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $13.40. During the regular session, the stock increased 6 cents to close at $13.73.

Groupon revises results to boost refund reserves

Groupon Inc. revised its fourth-quarter results after finding it needed to increase the amount of money it sets aside for refunds.

Groupon said Friday that it was selling online deals at higher prices during the period and that put it on the hook for larger refunds. The adjustment lowered the company's revenue for the period by $14.3 million.

It wasn't a good sign for Groupon as this was its first quarterly report since it went public in November.

The company's auditor Ernst & Young also flagged a weakness in the Groupon's internal controls over its financial statement. The Chicago company says it is working to address the underlying causes.

Groupon stood by its first-quarter guidance. Its shares plunged in after-hours trading on the news.

Kidney cancer subtype study finds low recurrence and cancer death rates

Patients with papillary renal cell carcinoma, the second most common kidney cancer subtype, face a low risk of tumour recurrence and cancer-related death after surgery. Those are the key findings of a multi-centre study of nearly 600 patients published in the April issue of the urology journal BJUI.

"Because papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) only affects ten to 15% of kidney cancer patients, the small number of patients enrolled in individual studies makes it hard to draw meaningful conclusions about how the disease will progress" says lead author Dr Vincenzo Ficarra, associate professor of urology at the University of Padua, Italy.

"Bringing together data on 577 patients from 16 academic centres across Italy has enabled us to study this subtype in more detail than a single-centre study would allow."

The patients with pRCC were identified from 5,463 patients with suspected renal cell carcinoma at the centres between 1995 and 2007. Follow-up ranged from 22 to 72 months and the median was just over 39 months.

Key findings of the study, which forms part of a larger research project promoted by LUNA, the clinical research office of the Italian Society of Urology, include:

• Patients averaged 62.4 years of age and 77% were male. The majority had presented with incidental symptoms (64%) and the size of the pathological tumours ranged from 3cm to 7cm, with a median size of 4.3cm.
• Most patients (62%) had radical nephrectomy surgery, where the entire kidney and its collecting system is removed, along with the adrenal gland, the fat tissue around the kidney and the associated lymph glands.
• At follow-up, 81% of the patients were alive and disease free. A further 14% had experienced disease progression, 11% had died from the disease and 5% had died from causes other than cancer.
• The overall average recurrence-free survival rates after surgery were 85.5% and 73.1% respectively. The cancer-specific survival rates after surgery were 87.9% at five years and 83.3% after ten years.
• Multivariable analysis, which determines the relative contributions of different causes to a single event, identified three independent predictors of recurrence-free survival rates. These were: Fuhrman nuclear grade (predictive grading system for renal cell cancer), N stage (coding system indicating absence or presence of secondary cancer in the regional lymph nodes) and M stage (coding system indicating absence or presence of distant secondary cancers at first therapeutic intervention).
• In this study 60% of patients were N stage pNx (regional nodes cannot be assessed), 97% were M stage MO (no indication that cancer has spread to distant parts of the body), 52% were Fuhrman grade G2 (low grade in a grading system of one to four) and 10% of patients had tumours at multiple sites.
• Fuhrman nuclear grade was found to be a particularly strong predictor of both recurrence-free and cancer-specific survival rates. In contrast, only a non-statistically significant trend was found for the 2009 pathological T stage (coding system that identifies the presence, size and extent of a primary tumour).

"Our multi-centre study shows that patients with papillary renal cell carcinoma face low tumour re-occurrence and cancer-related death rates" concludes Dr Ficarra. "It also identifies the main independent predictors of cancer-related outcomes as being pathological lymph node stage, presence of secondary cancer and Fuhrman nuclear grade."

'Hunger Games' critics: Katniss actress too big

While Jennifer Lawrence's acting performance in "The Hunger Games" was generally praised, some critics?are saying she was too large to play Katniss Everdeen, a teen from a starving futuristic land, who must hunt every day to keep her family fed.

In her March 22 New York Times review, ?Manohla Dargis wrote,??A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission."

Lawrence's weight comes in for some mention in other?reviews as well, though none as harsh as the Times' writeup.?Todd McCarthy's review for The Hollywood Reporter praises Lawrence's acting but points out her "lingering baby fat." And on Hollywood Elsewhere, Jeffrey Wells focuses on Lawrence's size as compared to co-star Josh Hutcherson, calling her???a fairly tall, big-boned lady,??and?writing that?"male romantic figures have to be at least be as tall as their female partners."?

Given that the movie's plot involves a starved nation, some see a point to the comments.

A Buzzfeed reader going?by Pacer points out specific references from?"The Hunger Games" book, saying,??Jennifer Lawrence is stunning and in no way, shape or form should she be considered fat, but I do understand the criticism. I know that Katniss was hunting to feed herself in District 12 so she wasn't exactly starving, and that the tributes were fattened up before they went into the arena, but in the actual Hunger Games all the tributes are starving and lose a lot of weight.??

Lawrence herself is quoted in New York Magazine?as telling British Glamour she purposely did not diet for the film in order to make Katniss a more fearsome competitor. "Katniss is meant to be a hunter; she?s meant to be scary," she said."?"Kate Moss?running at you with a bow and arrow isn?t scary."

?Some critics note that Lawrence's male co-stars don't come in for the same?pound-by-pound scrutiny.

?If critics are going to pick on a 21-year-old woman for not being skinny enough for a fantasy film, why haven?t they been more consistent in their critiques of actors? bodies?" writes LV Anderson at Slate.com.?"I haven?t seen much concern about Liam Hemsworth?s muscular frame, even though his character in 'The Hunger Games' occupies the same food-strapped world as Katniss.??

Lawrence?s co-star, Stanley Tucci told Buzzfeed, "Big-boned??(Those critics)?should go make their own movie ? that's ridiculous."

"I like her," celebrity style expert Robert Verdi told Hollywood.com. "I would argue that if they're working folks, they're going to be a little bit more robust and beefy. I think [you] can actually be working class and be stocky."

Even Sports Illustrated?model Anne Vyalitsyna jumped in to the fray, telling Hollywood.com, "It doesn't matter what people think. She's such a confident girl in general [and] that kind of shows on the screen and it inspires people. She's sending a really great message. At the end of the day, she's not big at all, so I don't know what people are talking about. She's playing a role that's very fit."

US cancer death rates continue to decline

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A report from the nation's leading cancer organizations shows rates of death in the United States from all cancers for men and women continued to decline between 2004 and 2008. The findings come from the latest Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.

The report also finds that the overall rate of new cancer diagnoses for men and women combined decreased an average of less than one percent per year from 1998 through 2006, with rates leveling off from 2006 through 2008. Edward J. Benz, Jr., MD, president of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, called the news encouraging, but is disappointed that the overall rate of cancer deaths is not falling nearly enough.

"The rate of cancer diagnoses and deaths across all racial and minority groups are slowly decreasing," said Benz. "But there are still gaps that must be addressed."

The report is co-authored by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society. It will be posted on the web site of the journal CANCER on March 28, 2012.

Among children ages 19 years or younger, the report shows cancer incidence rates increased 0.6 percent per year from 2004 through 2008, while death rates decreased 1.3 percent per year during the same period.

The authors also highlighted cancers associated with excess weight and lack of sufficient physical activity.

"This report emphasizes that the growing obesity problem and decreased overall physical activity in our society compared to decades ago have a real impact on multiple diseases, including cancer," said Jeffrey A. Meyerhardt, MD, MPH, a colorectal cancer expert at Dana-Farber and author of several studies investigating the impact of exercise on survival rates for colorectal cancer patients. "While we currently see declines in incidence of many cancers, if obesity continues at the current rates, I believe these improvements in incidence will reverse and increase over time."

Benz added that the good news is that some of the cancer risks the report highlighted can be reduced by changes in lifestyle.

"Many of the things that are still a problem in these statistics are modifiable," said Benz. Fish are the most low maintenance pets. These beautiful little creatures silently swim and add colour and natural beauty to our home d?cor. But however easy it is to maintain a fish pet, the fish aquarium cleaning is definitely a challenging job. If the fish tank cleaning is not done regularly and in a proper manner, the fish might die or start suffering skin disease.

Fish aquarium needs weekly or bi-weekly cleaning depending on the size and level of bacteria growth. You will come to know that the tank needs cleaning as it starts stinking and you can see dead leaves, growth of algae and unwanted plants. Cleaning a fish tank is the most important step in fish maintenance as feeding the fish is pretty simple and does not require much skill.

Dos and Don?ts of fish aquarium cleaning

• Keep tools like algae scrapper, algae magnet, siphon, etc handy when starting to clean the aquarium. Never use any other chemical or home-based cleaning agents for sanitizing the tank. This can threaten the health and life of the fish. Always buy the fish aquarium cleaning tools from a reputed pet shop.
• Fish owners are always wondering whether to take out whole water while cleaning the tank or clean by taking out half water only. Fish care experts believe that it is better to do the cleaning by taking out water partially. Use a siphon hose to pull out 15-20 percent of the tank?s water. Remove the unwanted plants, leftover food, and other garbage from the base of the tank. Partial cleaning of the tank ensures that some good bacteria still remains in the water that is important for the survival of the fish. A considerable amount of beneficial bacteria shall remain in the water for biological filtration.
• If you feel that the items inside the aquarium are too dirty then take out the decorative materials like stones, artificial plants, etc and clean them separately in mild bleach. This will avoid algae formation that takes place rapidly on these decorative materials. Take care to wash off the bleach properly before putting these inside the tank again. Many people prefer to keep algae eater fish like Pleco fish, Coral fish, etc that are natural algae eaters. However, just by adding algae eater fish into the aquarium does not mean that you never clean the check the algae formation inside the tank and take steps to control it.
• Refill the tank with fresh water that is free of chlorine. Take care to add water that is at room temperature rather than hot or too cold water. This can prove to be lethal for the fish.

Cleaning the fish aquarium in a proper manner is important because it ensures that fish live for a long time and stay healthy. Minor mistakes like using hard chemicals, detergent, injuring the fish, or removing all the water from the tank, can prove to be lethal for the fish. So fish owners should take extra care while cleaning the fish aquarium.

Arizona Democrat drops out of Senate race

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Don Bivens, a top Democratic challenger in Arizona's U.S. Senate race, has ended his campaign, saying the primary battle was draining resources the party needed to win in November.

Bivens' withdrawal clears a path in the Democratic primary for former surgeon general Richard Carmona.

Bivens is a former party chairman who got into the Senate race first, but Democratic officials in Washington made clear that they were recruiting Carmona to become the party's nominee.

Bivens said he was confident he could have won the primary fight, but the cost and impact could diminish the chances for a Democrat to win in November.

Rep. Jeff Flake and businessman Wil Cardon are competing in Arizona's Republican primary.
