1978 NJ killings defendant ruled fit for trial (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? A judge has ruled a man charged with killing five teenagers in Newark, N.J., in 1978 is competent to stand trial.

Superior Court Judge Patricia Costello ruled Monday defendant Lee Evans is capable of understanding the case against him.

The judge denied a motion by the Essex County prosecutor's office that would've required Evans to undergo a psychological examination.

Assistant prosecutor Peter Guarino tells Newark's The Star-Ledger newspaper he filed the request to try to head off the possibility Evans would argue on appeal that he was incompetent.

Evans and a cousin are charged with luring the teens to an abandoned building, tying them up and setting the building on fire in a dispute over stolen drugs. The bodies were never recovered.

Evans and his cousin have pleaded not guilty.

Crews begin preventative burns near US nuclear lab (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) ? Fire crews in Los Alamos, New Mexico, began targeted burns Wednesday along the western edge of a major US nuclear laboratory to remove fuels as a massive wildfire raged nearby.

Los Alamos National Laboratory will be closed Wednesday and Thursday "because of risks presented by the Las Conchas Fire and the mandatory evacuation of Los Alamos town site," the laboratory announced on its website.

About 350 firefighters, five helicopters and 12 trucks are battling the flames across 69,000 acres (27,920 hectares) of wildfire. So far, firefighters have contained three percent of the blaze, according to NewMexico authorities.

"Observers may notice increased smoke coming from the LANL border. At this time, there is no wildfire on laboratory property," the nuclear lab's website read.

Some 11,800 employees work at the historic lab, where the atomic bomb was developed during World War II.

Thousands of people have been forced from their homes in the Los Alamos area and 12 homes have burned, according to the fire department.

On Tuesday, LANL director Charles McMillan said that all nuclear and hazardous materials were out of danger.

Drugs used to treat prostate cancer in men may also be useful for difficult to treat breast cancers in some women, say researchers.

Hormone treatments such as tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors are ineffective against up to 30% of breast cancers.

Breast cancers can be driven by oestrogen

The study, in The EMBO Journal, suggests some of these tumours may respond to drugs for male cancers.
Cancer Research UK said the findings were a "great surprise".

Hormones can switch on genes which lead to cells dividing uncontrollably and developing into tumours.
In women, breast cancers can be driven by the female sex hormone oestrogen. In men, prostate cancer can be driven by male sex hormones - androgens.

Breakthroughs have been made in treatments for breast cancer by developing drugs which interfere with the oestrogen's action, halting the tumour's progress.

However, tumours which are not driven by the hormone have been harder to treat.

Researchers at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute found that some of these oestrogen negative tumours were instead influenced by male hormones.?

The same genes which were switched on by female sex hormones in oestrogen responsive tumours were activated by the male sex hormones.

It raises the prospect that drugs already developed for prostate cancer could help some women.

While androgens, such as testosterone, are typically associated with male development, they are also present in women.

The lead researcher Dr Ian Mills said: "This important discovery suggests that patients with a type of oestrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer may potentially benefit from therapies given to prostate cancer patients, which could transform treatment for this patient group in the future.

"But at the moment this laboratory research is still at an early stage."

Researchers said this could apply to up to 5% of all breast cancers.

Dr Lesley Walker, from Cancer Research UK, said: "Prostate cancer depends on the androgen receptor for growth so it's a great surprise that a type of breast cancer might also be fuelled by this protein."

Dr Caitlin Palframan, policy manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "This fascinating research opens the door to personalised treatment for a small group of breast cancer patients.

"Women with oestrogen receptor negative disease have fewer treatment options and new ways to tackle it are urgently needed.

Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in India, also called the only Floating lake in the world due to the floating phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matters at various stages of decomposition) on it, is located near Moirang in Manipur state, India.The etymology of Loktak is Lok = ?stream? and tak = ?the end?.The Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is the last natural refuge of the endangered sangai or Manipur brow-antlered deer (Rucervus eldi eldi), one of three subspecies of Eld?s Deer, covering an area of 40 km2 (15 sq mi), is situated in the southeastern shores of this lake and is the largest of all the phumdis in the lake.

Phumdis are a series of floating islands, exclusive to the Loktak Lake in Manipur state, in northeastern India. They cover a substantial part of the lake area and are heterogeneous masses of vegetation, soil and organic matter, in different stages of decay. The largest single mass of phumdi is in the southeastern part of the lake, covering an area of 40 km2 (15.4 sq mi). This mass constitutes the world?s largest floating park, named Keibul Lamjao National Park. The park was formed to preserve the endangered Eld?s Deer subspecies, called Sangai in the Manipuri language, indigenous to this area.

Phumdis in Loktak Lake

Phumdis are used by the local people for constructing their huts for fishing and other livelihood uses, and are inhabited by about 4000 people. Athapums are artificial circular phumdis, built by the villagers as enclosures for fish farming; aquaculture has caused proliferation of the phumdis in the lake.

This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. The lake is also a source of livelihood for the rural fisherman who live in the surrounding areas and on phumdis, also known as ?phumshongs?. Human activity has led to severe pressure on the lake ecosystem. 55 rural and urban hamlets around the lake have a population of about 100,000 people.

A rich biodiversity with habitat heterogeneity has been recorded during a scientific survey carried out between January 2000 and December 2002 in different habitat patches of the lake. The lake?s rich biological diversity comprises 233 species of aquatic macrophytes of emergent, submergent, free-floating and rooted floating leaf types.

Malaysia?s announcement of a graft probe against Abdul Taib Mahmud ("Taib"), head of state of the resource-rich Malaysian state of Sarawak, has put the University of Adelaide, South Australia, into an uncomfortable position. The University maintains close ties with the controversial Malaysian politician and has accepted donations worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from him. Native American Occupation of Alcatraz Ended

On This Day: In 1971 the Native American occupation of Alcatraz Island ended. Beginning on November 20, 1969, a group of Native Americans from many different tribes occupied the island, and proposed an education center, ecology center and cultural center. According to the occupants, the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868) between the U.S. and the Sioux included provisions to return all retired, abandoned or out-of-use federal land to the Native people from whom it was acquired. The Treaty of 1868 stated, however, that all abandoned or unused federal land adjacent to the Sioux Reservation could be reclaimed by descendants of the Sioux Nation. With the clarification, Indians of All Tribes abandoned the Sioux treaty as the basis of their occupation and claimed Alcatraz Island by "Right of Discovery". Begun by urban Indians in San Francisco, some of whom were descended from people who relocated there under the Federal Indian Reorganization Act of 1934), the occupation attracted other Native Americans from across the country, including American Indian Movement (AIM) activists from Minneapolis.

Fabregas quiet about Barca 'move' (AFP)

MADRID (AFP) ? Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas avoided discussing speculation over his possible return to Barcelona when he attended a ceremony in Madrid Wednesday, insisting he remains "an Arsenal player".

"If sometime I have to move from Arsenal I will say so when it happens, without disrespecting the club that has given me so much, but right now I'm an Arsenal player and I'm very happy there," Fabregas said during the presentation of some perfumes in Madrid.

"I'm very happy to be where I am, otherwise it would mislead people and lead to speculation," he said, but admitted he was unahppy at Arsenal's lack of silverware in recent years.

"Yes, I'm frustrated at not winning titles, I've always wanted to win and not winning always hurts more when you've given so much."

Spanish media has said recently that Gunners coach Arsene Wenger has abandoned efforts to hold on to Fabregas who could be set for a return to Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Barcelona-based sports daily Sport said on Wednesday that negotiations between the clubs have entered "a decisive phase".

Fabregas "is hoping that the two clubs can agree on a transfer fee", the newspaper said, adding that Barcelona is ready to pay 30 million euros while the London club wants 40 million for the 24-year-old midfielder, a star of Spain's 2010 World Cup-winning squad.

Wenger had insisted last month that he was determined to spend a second successive summer fighting off mighty Barcelona to keep Fabregas at the Emirates.

The Gunners turned down a bid from the Spanish champions last year for a player who spent his junior days at Barcelona before joining Arsenal at the age of 16 in 2003.

"I am a Barca supporter. I am a member like my grandfather, my uncle, my cousin..," Fabregas said last year.

"I love their colours since I was very small. I am Catalan. However, I am captain of Arsenal, I am a Gunner and it is there that I have become a player and that I have matured as a person."

Charlie Sheen loses early round in "Men" lawsuit (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A judge on Wednesday sent Charlie Sheen's lawsuit against Warner Bros. to arbitration, in a ruling that denies the actor an open court hearing over his firing from hit sitcom "Two and a Half Men."

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Allan Goodman's ruling was seen as a victory for the studio behind the sitcom and for producer Chuck Lorre, who also was a target of Sheen's lawsuit after a feud with the actor.

After taking a break from the show for drug rehabilitation following a wild party at his house, Sheen was fired in March from "Two and a Half Men," which is produced by Warner Bros. but airs on CBS.

Sheen, who claims in the suit that he was fired after criticizing producers, is seeking more $100 million in damages.

Goodman's ruling puts off the opportunity for Sheen to present his accusations in open court, which could save the parties involved from potential embarrassment.

The judge noted in his 21-page decision that Sheen's contract called for disputes to be referred to arbitration.

"We're very gratified by the court's ruling enforcing the parties' arbitration agreement," Warner Bros. said in a statement.

In a public war of words with Lorre this year, Sheen called the producer "a "stupid, stupid little man" and other derogatory, expletive-filled comments.

Lorre's attorney, Howard Weitzman, said in a statement following the judge's ruling, "This matter will now proceed in an orderly fashion as the parties agreed to."

Marty Singer, an attorney for Sheen, said the arbitrator could send the case back to open court.

"We feel very confident our client will prevail in the case," Singer said. "That's what matters at the end of the day, it's who wins and who loses, not who wins in the preliminary skirmishes."

Mark Rylance wins Tony, leaves everyone confused (AP)

NEW YORK ? Mark Rylance won his second Tony Award. And, for a second time, left people baffled.

The British-born actor won the leading actor Tony on Sunday for playing Johnny "Rooster" Byron, a charismatic leader of a band of social misfits and outcasts squatting in the English woods, in Jez Butterworth's "Jerusalem."

He strode to the podium and then began talking about walls and molecular structure. "Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than pot-making or driftwood lamps," he said matter-of-factly.

It was a repeat of three years ago when Rylance similarly confused the Tony audience when he went on stage to collect the top acting prize for his work in "Boeing-Boeing."

"If you go into the woods, the back country, someplace past all human habitation, it is a good idea to wear orange and carry a gun," he told the crowd in 2008. "Or, depending on the season, carry a fishing pole, or a camera with a big lens."

It turns out that both times Rylance was quoting works by Louis Jenkins, an obscure poet from Minnesota. At the 2008 Tonys, Rylance was citing "The Back Country." On Sunday night, the Jenkins poem was "Walking Through a Wall."

Why did he do it? "I feel kind of sad when I win things, to be honest with you," he said backstage before being whisked away. "I always think you should prepare something to say."

Rylance, who was the first artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe in London from 1995 to 2005, told The Associated Press in the days leading up to his second win that sowing confusion is part of the point of the poems.

"I bet most people understood it in many different ways, which was kind of the point of it anyway," he said. "It was the contrast of the poetry of Louis Jenkins and that system of awards ? of winners and losers ? that intrigued me as a piece of theater, really."

He said he had been preparing three or four things to say if he won. He had been told he had only about 90 seconds to speak, including the walk up the stage. He had definitely ruled out the traditional listing of peoples' names, finding it unengaging.

"No one else will ever do the poems that I do because they're my thing. So it's tempting to give them another wonderful poem," he said. "It won't be a surprise but I don't think that matters."

'Game Of Thrones' Star Sean Bean Shares In Fans' Shock

Actor talks about his initial reaction to the 'heroic' turn of events in 'Baelor.' Spoiler alert!

So how about Sunday night's episode of "Game of Thrones"? To say that it was a doozy barely scratches the surface of all the shameless double-crossing and bloodshed that occurred.

SPOILER ALERT!: For those who haven't yet watched "Baelor" (or read the novel), do not read any further. MAJOR, major spoilers ahead.

A recap can hardly do justice to the episode's gruesome events, which have been adapted quite faithfully from author George R.R. Martin's brilliant plot twists and turns, but we can provide you with a video interview of "Game of Thrones" star Sean Bean talking about the big "event."

"It's quite heroic, I suppose," Bean told MTV News of the lead into his character's shocking death scene. "I didn't just get knocked off and nobody notices. Plenty of people noticed," he said with a smile. "It was a good one."

Bean said that when he read Martin's book, Ned Stark's death was as much of a shock to him as anyone.

"He's such a predominant character, straight through all of it, and you think, 'Wait a minute, what's happening?' He's obviously been betrayed left and right and center, but you never thought it would come to this," he admitted. "Even the shock on his face before it happens it's like, 'But we made a deal.' It's a pretty awful ending and the kids are watching as well."

Bean said that the short-lived role was amazing to play, and the filming of his final scene was appropriately epic and ambitious.

"We were in Malta in the middle of a big square," he recalled. "A big piazza with hundreds and hundreds of people on a raised platform, I'm making a last speech, I have my hands tied behind back. I kind of say that I have betrayed the realm and I have been a traitor in order to save my children. ... It's real heartbreaking stuff."

But as Martin fans well know, this doesn't mean the end of shocking twists in the series, because, as Cersei Lannister put it, "In the game of thrones, you win, or you die."

Classic Gaming Expo Makes E3 Old Again

Tucked into a corner of the Los Angeles Convention Center was a retro gamer?s paradise.

Arcade cabinets lined the back wall of the booth, flanking row after row of classic game consoles. Literally everything was there, from the Magnavox Odyssey to the TurboGrafx-16 to the Nintendo 64, many of them playable. An old TV cabinet played Space Invaders, right behind a glass display case with some of the rarest video game hardware in the world.

And at the center of it all was Joe Santulli, dressed in a crisp white suit and turquoise shirt, as if he?d stepped out of the 80s. After a three-year absence, Santulli and his fellow collectors have brought the Classic Gaming Expo back to E3, this time with a new purpose: They want to build a museum for video game history.

The Videogame History Museum would be a permanent extension to the Classic Gaming Expo, which in addition to its E3 appearances is held every summer in Las Vegas. The expo is now 12 years old, and yearly networking has allowed Santulli and his peers to collect more than 20,000 items related to gaming?s past, some of them extremely rare. The Atari Cosmos, for instance, is one of only five in existence.

?Over the years, we?ve amassed so much stuff that we started to think, rather than have this once a year, why not have a place that?s a destination?? Santulli said. The group has started a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and hopes to raise enough money to open a facility somewhere in the San Jose area.

So far, it?s been a challenge. ?The economy?s bad,? Santulli said. ?People don?t want to invest, but I do believe we have something that?s going to work.?
