Verizon's $2 convenience fee inconveniences the FCC

Just like hard working humans, giant companies like to get paid consistently and on time for services rendered. But Verizon's method for motivating customers to pay up -- in the form of a $2 convenience fee -- isn't sitting so well with consumers, or the FCC. A Federal Communications Commission official confirmed that the fee hasn't gone unnoticed, saying "on behalf of American consumers, we're concerned about Verizon's actions and are looking into the matter." The $2 "payment convenience fee" is scheduled to hit consumers beginning on January 15th, but if the FCC doesn't step in before then, you can still skip the toll by signing up for AutoPay, or making your way to a different carrier.

Verizon's $2 convenience fee inconveniences the FCC originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:12:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Death toll of Aug. blast at UN Nigeria rises to 25 (AP)

ABUJA, Nigeria ? The U.N. says another staff member has died about four months after a car bombing hit its Nigeria headquarters, bringing the death toll to 25.

The U.N. said in a statement Wednesday that Fred Willis, who worked for The United Nations Children's Fund, died in South Africa on Dec. 23.

It said Willis was one of 12 U.N. staff members flown on life support to South Africa for treatment after the Aug. 26 attack.

A radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the blast that also wounded 116 people. It was the group's first suicide attack targeting foreigners.

Boko Haram has reported links to al-Qaida and also has claimed responsibility for coordinated Christmas Day attacks that killed 39 people.

What is a 'gamer' in 2011? ? GeekOut - CNN.com Blogs

The word "gamer" was more prevalent than ever in our lexicon this year.

Zachary Levi recently chimed in with his theory that everyone is a gamer at some level.

CNN Geek Out recently spoke to hardcore gamer Morgan Webb, host of ?X-Play? on G4, and asked her what it means to be a gamer and about the state of gaming in 2011.

?Unfortunately, it is a more confusing word now because there are so many different types of games and so many people playing games from on their cell phones, or on Facebook, or on many other things," she said.

"The word encompasses so many different groups, so it doesn?t really mean as much as it used to. I call myself a gamer, but someone?s mom who plays ?Farmville? all the time, maybe she calls herself a gamer too, and she should, because she is. I think we need words to start differentiating the subgroups.?

Webb got into gaming well before "Farmville," of course. Her first console was an Atari 2600, where she played ?Combat? and ?Plaque Attack? for hours on end. She is also an avowed fanatic when it comes to the ?Centipede? arcade game.
Below, more of our chat with Webb about the year in gaming.

CNN Geek Out: This was a year for sequels. Every major title that came out had a number after it. Why is that?

Webb: We?re nearly at the end of a console cycle, so series that have begun at the beginning of the console cycle, they?re starting to finish up the series. People have made the investment in the franchise and they?ve got the art together and they don?t want to create something completely new when new consoles are starting to be on the horizon.

CNN Geek Out: Were there any games that surprised you this year?

Webb: "LA Noire" from Rockstar. Rockstar traditionally makes very good games, but we were surprised and delighted that the game had a very different perspective on the traditional "Grand Theft Auto"-style open world game. That was a great surprise and a great game.

Geek Out: What?s going to be different in the next generation of consoles?

Webb: I think they are going to have a lot of cloud functionality. You?ll be able to play games on the cloud. You?ll definitely be able to have saves on the cloud. They?re going to start transitioning people off of discs. That doesn?t mean they aren?t going to have disc drives because they are. But we?re going to start having consoles with big hard drives that you can gather those games because you?re going to have much better bandwidth. You?re going to be able to download those games more often. They?re going to want to start that transition and start cutting out the actual game stores just like how book stores have been cut out from books. On the gaming side, we going to see very powerful graphics cards and we?re going to see very powerful processors. They?re going to be very powerful computers that are going to sit next to your television and they?re going to be very good prices for what you are going to get.

CNN Geek Out: With the Wii U and the PlayStation Vita coming out next year, is this where we are headed with more motion controls and less button pushing in gaming?

Webb: I think there is room for both. Core gamers - the hardcore gamers who play games like "Gears of War," "Call of Duty," "Assassin's Creed" and Skyrim" - that gamer is definitely more interested in using a controller for a lot of their experiences. The problem is that [with] the [PlayStation] Move, these motion experiences aren?t nuanced enough to actually give the player as much control as they would have with a [regular] controller. For example, if you are swinging a sword on a Wii game, you slash to the right and it does a right slash or slash to the left and it does a left slash, but it doesn?t really track or there is no skill involved. Now you are just standing up there making slashing motions for three hours.

CNN Geek Out: Are the console wars still alive or has the battle moved to specific game titles?

Webb: I think there are people on the Internet who sit there and decide that everything on the PlayStation is awesome and everything on the Xbox is awful and people who think that everything on the Xbox is great and everything on the PS3 is terrible. We call those people trolls. People become emotionally invested in the console they purchase, so that?s the reason they get so attached to it. I think in general most people are saying, "Hey, I have an Xbox and I like it, and lots of good games come out for both consoles." Each console has their exclusives and they are great exclusives on each. The Wii tends to have fewer rabid proponents because it tends to aim for a more casual audience.

While Webb would not name her 2011 Game of the Year, she did have some recommendations that players should pick up if they can:

?The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? ? ?You have adventures in this world that is very living and you have hundreds and thousands of choices you make and it all seamlessly works together.?

?Uncharted 3? ? ?This is what we want the ?Indiana Jones? movies to be. You are living and playing that ?Indiana Jones? treasure hunting experience.?

?Resistance 3? ? ?A little off the beaten path. It has funky, over-the-top weapons, but funny weapons, weird crazy weapons that you aren?t going to see anywhere else.?

?Saints Row The Third? ? ?A GTA style game that is hilarious and over-the-top and crazy. Not for kids!?

?Portal 2? ? ?There are some great puzzles in there.?

Sony Ericsson reminds us its sync service is shutting down, use Google's instead

Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson today is sending out e-mails reminding folks (or chaps, since the e-mail we received was sent to our UK operation) that it's shutting down its Sony Ericcson Sync service on Dec. 29. The good news, of course, is that you can (and really should) sync all the same stuff with your Google account, including your contacts and calendars, along with, well, every thing else Android does extremely well.

So, you've got a couple days left to get it down. SE's worked up some instructions to ease the transition. Give 'em a look.

Any GSM phone vulnerable to new scam: researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? A well-known expert on mobile phone security says a vulnerability in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones, instructing them to send text messages or make calls.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM network technology, which is used by billions of people in about 80 percent of the global mobile market, to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Germany's Security Research Labs.

Similar attacks against a small number of smartphones have been done before, but the new attack could expose any cellphone using GSM technology.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short timeframe," Nohl told Reuters in advance of a presentation at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up across Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically don't identify the problem until after they receive their bills and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present details of attack at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, shows a new ranking Nohl will demonstrate at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, lets consumers to see how their operators are performing and lets anyone to participate in measurement of their carriers' security.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in gathering of the data.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

"Mobile network is by far the weakest part of the mobile ecosystem, even when compared to a lot attacked Android or iOS devices," he said.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

Conn. house where 5 died in fire is torn down (AP)

STAMFORD, Conn. ? A house severely damaged in a Christmas morning fire that killed three children and two grandparents, one of whom worked as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, has been torn down.

The building department determined that the $1.7 million house was unsafe and ordered it razed, Stamford fire chief Antonio Conte said.

The home's owner, advertising executive Madonna Badger, and her male acquaintance escaped from the fire. But Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? and her parents, who were visiting for the holiday, died, police said.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday and rushed outside to help, but could do nothing as flames devoured the large, turreted home.

Police said the male acquaintance who escaped the blaze with Badger was a contractor working on the home. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

Interviews with them will be finished Monday, Conte said. He had no details on the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Saks Fifth Avenue confirmed in a statement that Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, had worked as a Santa this year at its flagship store in Manhattan.

"Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening. Her whereabouts Monday was unknown.

Property records show Badger bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house was situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The lot where the house once stood was covered with charred debris and cordoned off by police with tape on Monday. Passers-by left bouquets, stuffed animals and candles nearby.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford, offered his condolences to Badger and her family in a statement and said her loss "defies explanation."

The fire was Stamford's deadliest since a 1987 blaze that also killed five people, Conte said.

Rajinikanth lends wedding hall for anti-corruption fast: Team Anna

Pledging his support to anti-graft initiatives, superstar Rajinikanth has lent his sprawling marriage hall in Chennai free of cost for the three-day fast being organised by Team Anna activists for a strong Lokpal Bill.

"We are organising a three-day fast from tomorrow. We had approached him for support. He (Rajinikanth) accepted it and said he was always for anti-corruption," India Against Corruption's (IAC) Central Core Committee member MS Chandramohan said on Monday.

The Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam in the heart of Chennai in Kodambakkam locality will be the venue for the fast being held from Tuesday to express solidarity with social activist Anna Hazare, who is beginning his fast in Mumbai.

"He (Rajinikanth) offered it free of cost and said it was his service to the country," Chandramohan said.

Asked whether Rajnikanth would visit the venue during the fast, Chandramohan said, "He is always invited. But, he has not said anything on that possibility so far."

IAC is also planning to hold 'jail bharo' andolan' from December 30, he said.

Sony Tablet S to get Ice Cream Sandwich update, timeframe coming 'soon'

Sony Tablet S

Some may love the shape of the Sony Tablet S, some may hate it, but one thing everyone can agree on is that it will be better with Ice Cream Sandwich.  According to staff at the Sony Tablet discussion forums, the Android 4 update for the Sony Tablet S is happening, and the timeframe for said update is "coming soon."  The Tegra 2 tablet with the unique look and feel wasn't a huge hit for Sony, but it's nice to see them continuing support and keeping behind this one.  We'll keep our ears open and let you know when "soon" turns into an actual date.

Winter solstice means 'illumination' at California mission

Reporting from San Juan Bautista, Calif. -- On the darkest day of the year, a hushed crowd in a dim church awaited a few minutes of sheer brilliance.

It was just after dawn Wednesday, the day of the winter solstice. Outside the 200-year-old mission at the heart of tiny San Juan Bautista, Native American drummers sang, urging the sun to rise. Inside, dozens of parishioners rubbed the sleep from their eyes. A woman stood up and sang in cadences haunting and solemn ? phrases in no known tongue, she said, but "the language of the heart."

They were gathered for what has come to be known as an "illumination," a brief, breathtaking interval when a sunbeam penetrates the church's front window to bathe the altar and the sacred objects around it in a blazing patch of light. The mission perched at the edge of the San Andreas fault sees it but once a year.

As roosters crowed, a luminous rectangle appeared on the wall just to the left of the altar. Turning gold and then fiery, it slowly moved over the altar. At that moment, someone threw open the church's great double doors and a river of light shot down the 188-foot-long main aisle. One by one, parishioners were led to the altar for their moment in the sun.

It was a spectacular moment ? but what it means is an open question. Some researchers say the illuminations at San Juan Bautista and other missions are nothing more than great special effects.

But for Ruben Mendoza, an archaeologist who teaches at Cal State Monterey Bay, they're more significant. According to Mendoza, Franciscan architects carefully engineered the luminous event for the sun-worshiping local Indians they sought to convert.

"For many Native American groups," he said, "the solstice was the most dreaded day of the year. They believed the sun was dying and only its rebirth could ensure their survival."

Mendoza has been researching illuminations for years. He saw his first one 11 years ago, and it moved him deeply. At the time, he was both a worshiper at San Juan Bautista and a researcher supervising an archaeological dig on the mission's grounds.

In 1997, the mission's priest spotted an illumination while opening the church for a small group of post-dawn pilgrims. After that, he held a number of solstice observances, hoping the Central Coast's morning fog wouldn't seal out the sun.

Both as a Catholic and as a scientist, Mendoza was eager to see it.

The son of a Spanish-language radio announcer, he grew up in Fresno but fell in love with history on a fourth-grade field trip to San Juan Bautista. As a student and then as head of his university's Institute of Archaeology, he poured himself into Aztec cosmology, archaeoastronomy and, most recently, the solar geometry of California's missions.

On that morning in 2000, Mendoza saw the light.

"As I approached the altar-borne tabernacle with camera at the ready, I was smitten by the most unusual sensation that I was soon to share two centuries of a most esoteric and spiritual experience," he later wrote in the mission's newsletter. "I couldn't help but feel what many describe when in the course of a near-death experience ? they see the light of the great beyond."

Since then, he has toted his cameras, compasses and computers throughout the West, chasing sunbeams into California's 21 missions, as well as dozens of other churches built by early Spanish friars throughout the Southwest and Mexico.

So far, he says, he has found "solstice, equinox and feast day solar illuminations of main altar tabernacles" at 60 sites.

In California, Old World diseases devastated the Native Americans who lived and toiled at the missions. Native languages and cultures died as well. But Junipero Serra's Franciscan monks were so intent on winning new souls that, according to Mendoza, they precisely oriented at least 13 missions and an old Spanish chapel to capture illuminations ? some on days that would have been sacred in Native American faiths.

The buildings functioned as "ecclesiastical computers," he said ? much like cathedrals built in Europe centuries before the missions. Those great, vaulted, dark spaces also served as observatories, with astronomers focusing sunbeams through strategically carved openings to make a variety of calculations ? from the date of Easter Sunday to the diameter of the sun.

At San Juan Bautista, the science was focused on the solstice, according to Mendoza. With ancient building techniques and the kind of instruments mariners had been using for centuries, the friars, he said, created the kind of solar spectacle that wouldn't have been out of place at Stonehenge or in ancient Rome.

Over the last decade, Mendoza has seen other such moments. At Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel, it's on the summer solstice. At Mission San Miguel, statues of saints are illuminated on a series of their feast days in October. In San Jose, the illumination occurs at sunset on the spring and fall equinoxes.

Scientists Discover First Ever Earth-Sized and Smaller Planets (ContributorNetwork)

Researchers, scientists, and astronomers -- both amateur and professional -- have added hundreds of planets to the rolls of confirmed worlds orbiting other stars in the past few years, and the number is accelerating due to interest and thousands of sighted possible planets revealed by the various telescopes scanning the heavens.

But of all the hundreds of confirmed extra-solar planets thus far, not one of them had been found to be of Earth's size or smaller. This week, scientists announced in Nature that two such planets had been found, one of Earth's relative size and one somewhat smaller, and that those two Earth-sized planets were orbiting a Sun-like star as well.

Dr. Francois Fressin, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, led the study that found the two worlds. Noting that the discovery touched off a "new era" in extra-solar planet exploration, according to BBC News , Fressin noted that the worlds were found circling Keppler-20, a star that had previously been found to be the center of a planetary cluster of three planets.

The two planets, Keppler-20e and -20f, are believed to be rocky entities, much like the inner planets of our own Solar System. The outer world, -20f, is believed to perhaps once have had an atmosphere. Both were once further from their star and have gradually been drawn inward, the scientists believe.

"We know that these two planets may have migrated closer to their Sun," Fressin told BBC News. "(The larger of the two) might have been an Earth twin in the past. It has the same size as Earth and in the past it could have had the same temperature."

Keppler-20e is smaller than Earth, measuring at 0.87 of Earth's radius. The larger exoplanet is nearly the same size as earth and measures 1.03 of Earth's radius, making it just a bit bigger than Earth. Both lie outside the habitable zone -- and too close to their parent star -- that scientists believe is the most conducive to sustaining life as it is generally understood to exist.

What makes the Fressin, et. al., significant is that it marks the first discoveries of near-Earth-size planets. All other planets detected prior to the study had been fairly larger than Earth. In fact, according to the study, before the detection of Keppler-20e and -20f, the smallest extrasolar planet found had measured 1.42 times the size of Earth.

The search for Earth-like and Earth-sized planets has been ongoing from the start. But the detection of such small worlds is not as simple as it might seem. Although planets are found by studying the gravitational "wobble" of the parent star (a "wobble" generally means that something of mass is affecting the star's orbit and/or rotation), they are often confirmed via their transit shadow on their parent star. Relative size is determined in this manner as well.

Fressin was part of the team that announced in early December that they had found an Earth twin. The BBC reported that, although the planet, Keppler-22b, was 2.4 times the size of our own planet, it was found within the "Goldilocks" or habitable zone. Keppler 22b is about 15 percent closer to its sun than our planet and has a higher average temperature (22 Celsius as opposed to the 14-15 Celsius enjoyed by Earth).

The announcement was accompanied by news at the first Keppler Conference that the Keppler telescope had identified another 2,300 candidate planets. Of those, 207 were believed to be near Earth's size.

Fressin noted that the new discovery is possibly more important than that of Keppler-22b.

"With every new discovery we're getting closer to the 'holy grail' of an Earth-like planet around a Sun-like star," he said. That "holy grail" would be a planet that was similar in size, had a like composition, had a similar atmosphere, and orbited at the relative same distance from the sun -- a true Earth twin.

Prior to the Keppler-22b discovery, scientists had announced the finding of several super-Earths. The first, Gliese-581d, was announced in May. Then HD 85512 b was revealed in August.

Thus far, over 700 planets have been confirmed to exist, according to MSNBC. Of that number, only a small fraction have been found to be in the Goldilocks Zone of habitability. And now, two, one Earth-size and one smaller, can be added to the growing number of detected worlds, although not as candidates of supporting life conditions that are Earth-like.

PC Pandora 7.0

Giving your child an Internet-capable computer opens up access to a whole world of content and connections, including nasty content and dangerous connections. Parental control utilities typically strike a balance between warding off dangers and giving parents insight into what the kids are doing online. PC Pandora 7.0 ($109.95 direct) focuses strongly on monitoring everything the child does, not so much on controlling specific activities.

Like WebWatcher ($169.95 direct, 4 stars) and Spector Pro 2011 ($99.95 direct, 3.5 stars), PC Pandora tracks absolutely everything that happens on the target computer. Every password typed, every chat conversation, every document created?nothing escapes these comprehensive monitors.

This kind of power could easily be used for illicit spying. When installing Spector Pro you must verify that you own the computer and that you'll notify users they're being watched. PC Pandora requires more than that. Its installer presents a lengthy and detailed privacy agreement. However, most users will click right past it just as they click past license agreements.

Snapshots, Sites, and Search
As soon as you install it and reboot the system, PC Pandora starts monitoring. By default it snaps a screenshot every 30 seconds; you can change that interval from one to 599 seconds. Spector Pro and WebWatcher both capture screenshots when specific events occur, so as not to miss anything important. PC Pandora's strictly time-based system might miss capturing some important event that would be snapped by the other two.

Naturally, the product monitors every website visited, now including secure (HTTPS) sites. It keeps a separate log of each Web request including requests that didn't result in displaying a webpage. For most parents, the simple list of websites will be more useful than the Web requests list.

In trying to get a handle on that Web requests tab, I found that PC Pandora's user manual and help system are outdated. Neither includes any mention of Web requests, and the "what's new" page in the help lists features that were already present two versions ago.

If the PC has a webcam, PC Pandora can snap a photo of the user every so often. It records search terms uses at popular search portals, notes files created, deleted, modified, or printed, and reports on peer-to-peer file transfers. It even tracks bandwidth use by different processes.

The local log viewer, accessed by pressing a special key combination and entering a password, displays all the saved information in detail. Most of the viewer's tabs include a big pie chart showing the top items in the category. For example, the Websites tab breaks down the top sites visited and the programs tab shows the most-used programs.

The Snapshots tab displays thumbnails for all the saved screen snapshots. Double-clicking a thumbnail opens the image at full size. From this view you can tap the left and right arrow keys to step through the images. That's as close as you'll get to the hands-free slideshow mode found in Spector Pro.

Ryan, Abraham lead Falcons to 41-14 rout of Jags (AP)

ATLANTA ? As the Atlanta Falcons learned so painfully in last season's playoffs, the key is peaking at the right time.

Maybe they'll get it right this season.

With their best effort of an up-and-down season, the Falcons clinched a fourth straight winning record with a 41-14 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. Matt Ryan had another big game, throwing three touchdown passes in less than three quarters of work, and John Abraham terrorized rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert with 3 1/2 sacks.

"I feel like we've hit our stride," said Roddy White, who had 10 catches for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

A year ago, the Falcons won the NFC South with a conference-leading 13 wins. But they were one-and-done in the playoffs, blown out at home by the Green Bay Packers in the division round.

The Packers went on to claim the Super Bowl title and haven't lost since.

Atlanta would like to follow their lead.

"You know, Green Bay did a heck of a job last year peaking at the right time," White said. "I feel like we haven't hit our stride. The last two games, we've been hitting it."

Atlanta led 27-0 at halftime and stretched it out to 41-0 before Jacksonville scored on a blocked punt. Going back to the previous week, when the Falcons overcame a 16-point halftime deficit at Carolina, they ripped off 65 points in a row over five quarters.

Now that's more like it from a team that was projected as a Super Bowl contender but had not quite lived up to expectations.

Atlanta (9-5) strengthened its hold on an NFC wild card and clinched its fourth straight winning season.

Ho hum. This team has much higher goals than finishing above .500.

"I'm glad we've been able to accomplish that as an organization and a football team," coach Mike Smith said. "But believe me, it's not one of those expectations we really want to talk about. If we're where we think we are as an organization and a football team, that's expected each and every year."

It wasn't so long ago that nine victories was a big deal. The Falcons went through the first 42 years of their existence without so much as back-to-back winning seasons.

All that changed when Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff took over in 2008.

"I can't speak to the people who came before, but I know since Thomas and I had the opportunity to be here, we've just kind of put our heads down and gone to work," the coach said. "When you do that, good things usually happen. We are not finished, believe me. Our expectations and internal goals are much higher than having a winning football season."

This one was over by halftime, Gabbert and the shell-shocked Jaguars (4-10) saddled with a net passing total of minus-1 yard. It got as bad as minus-29 before Jacksonville piled up some meaningless yards on its final two possessions.

Gabbert had one of his worst games in a miserable rookie season, coughing up the ball twice on hits by Abraham. Both fumbles led to Atlanta scores, with defensive tackle Corey Peters scooping up the second one and scooting 13 yards to the end zone early in the third quarter for a touchdown that ended any thought of the Jaguars getting back in the game.

"It wasn't just me," said Abraham, who came into the game with only five sacks on the season. "The whole team was able to get to the quarterback."

Ryan was 19 of 26 for 224 yards and three touchdowns, with a season-high rating of 137.3. Rookie Julio Jones had the other TD on a 29-yard reception, his third score in the past two weeks.

Gabbert was 12 of 22 for 141 yards, also throwing an interception during a truly awful night full of bad decisions when he wasn't running for his life. He was sacked five times and got most of his yards on an irrelevant final drive, which resulted in Jacksonville's only offensive touchdown: a 16-yard pass to Chastin West with 59 seconds remaining.

"It wasn't our best night," Gabbert said. "We've just got to learn from it, take the positives out of it and just get better."

The injury-riddled Jaguars, playing out the season with an interim coach and a new owner, were coming off their best performance, having scored 41 straight points in a 41-14 victory over Tampa Bay. But, playing for the third time in 11 days, they couldn't build any momentum for a strong finish.

Shahid Khan must have been wondering why he paid an estimated $760 million to buy the team from original Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver in a deal that was unanimously approved by NFL owners a day earlier.

Michael Turner had a 5-yard touchdown run and Matt Bryant kicked a pair of field goals to account for Atlanta's other scoring in the 41-point barrage.

"We didn't execute good against a good team and you saw what happened," Lewis said. "Nothing really more to it. Things got out of hand way too fast and we weren't able to recover.

Gaddafi's death may be war crime: ICC prosecutor (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The death of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was captured and killed by rebels in October, may have been a war crime, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Thursday.

"I think the way in which Mr Gaddafi was killed creates suspicions of ... war crimes," ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo told reporters.

"I think that's a very important issue," he said. "We are raising this concern to the national authorities and they are preparing a plan to have a comprehensive strategy to investigate all these crimes."

Under pressure from Western allies, Libya's National Transitional Council has promised to investigate how Gaddafi and his son Mo'tassim were killed.

Mobile phone footage showed both alive after their capture. The former Libyan leader was seen being mocked, beaten and abused before he died, in what NTC officials said was crossfire.

The U.N. Security Council referred Gaddafi's crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators to the ICC in February and authorized military intervention to protect civilians in March. The ICC indicted Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and the former intelligence chief for war crimes.

Saif al-Islam is now in the custody of the Libyan authorities who have said they plan to try in him in Libya instead of handing him over to The Hague-based ICC. Moreno-Ocampo has said this was possible.

Moreno-Ocampo has also said he was investigating allegations that the anti-Gaddafi forces and NATO were also guilty of war crimes during the civil war.

IDC: iPad maintains tablet dominance, HP's TouchPad fire sale burned brightly

While the Android tablets continue to roll in, Apple can still lay claim to the lion's share of the tablet market according to IDC's latest report. Its research suggests that the iPad holds onto 61.5 percent of the worldwide market share, down from 63.3 percent last quarter. Android devices in total also saw a slight contraction, down from 33.2 percent to 32.4 percent. This is partly explained by the HP TouchPad's final hurrah, which rocketed the ill-fated webOS tablet up to third place with a 5 percent of share of tablet sales and an estimated 903,354 devices sold. Samsung maintained its Honeycomb tablet crown, nabbing 5.6 percent of all tablet sales. The Korean manufacturer was closely tailed by Barnes and Noble's Nook Color with 4.5 percent and Asus, arriving at fifth place with a four percent share. Tablets in total sold less than the analysts had predicted, although growth has still exploded 264 percent compared to this time last year. Meanwhile, E-readers outperformed estimates, with 6.5 million E-readers sold in the third quarter, up 165.9 percent from last year. IDC expects some disruptive new tablets will spice up the fourth quarter results and you can take a look at its findings and predictions at the full press release below.
