DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan ? Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. drone has crashed in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border.

Captured drug kingpin's exotic pets strain Mexico's zoos | NOLA.com

TOLUCA, Mexico -- The three tiny squirrel monkeys led a life of luxury on a 16-acre ranch, surrounded by extravagant gardens and barns built for purebred horses.

More than 200 animals, ranging from mules to peacocks and ostriches, lived on the ranch in central Mexico and hundreds more stayed on two related properties, many in opulent enclosures. Also kept on the grounds were less furry fare: AK-47 assault rifles, Berrettas, hundreds of other weapons and cocaine.

The ranch's owner was Jesus "The King" Zambada, a leader of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel. He had developed a love for exotic species shared with other kingpins. Just two days before Zambada's arrest, police confiscated two tigers and two lions from a drug gang hideout on the forested outskirts of Mexico City.

As federal authorities capture a growing number of gang leaders, many of their pets are being driven from their gilded cages into more modest housing in the country's zoos.

That's proved overwhelming for some institutions, which are struggling to cope with the influx. But it's also giving Mexican animal lovers a bounty of new creatures to admire.

Like Zambada, who was apprehended in October 2008, the squirrel monkeys sit in state custody, chirping away at gawking children at the Zacango Zoo, about an hour outside Mexico City.

Their previous home "was a very big enclosure made of good quality material," said Manlio Nucamendi, the zoo's coordinator. "But they didn't have the right diet and medical attention."

Mexican forces have discovered drug cartel private zoos that housed tigers, panthers and lions among other animals of exotic breeds, though the federal Attorney General's Office, which supervises all seizures from drug gangs, couldn't provide an exact count of the number of animals seized.

Whatever the number, officials have been challenged to house the armies of confiscated drug cartel animals.

"Within the limited resources of the Mexican government, there are a lot of efforts to ensure the welfare of these animals," said Adrian Reuter Cortes of the conservation group the World Wildlife Fund in Mexico. "But even the zoos have limits, and can't welcome all the animals."

The government usually calls zoos for help because they have the expertise, equipment and vehicles to transport large animals, said Frank Carlos Camacho, executive director of the wild animal park Africam Safari in the central Mexico city of Puebla and president of the national association of zoos.

"There's some risk involved in handling animals like big cats, bears and large herbivores," Camacho said.

He said he has heard of drug cartel zoos that included giraffes, buffalos and camels.

As the cinematic gangster film "Scarface" portrayed in 1983, private zoos have long been considered status symbols for drug kingpins eager to show off their wealth.

Descendants of Colombian drug boss Pablo Escobar's hippopotamuses still roam his private zoo in Colombia, which became state property after his killing and is now a tourist attraction. Three of the beasts escaped and lived in the wild for two years.

Some kingpins also use the beasts for more nefarious purposes.

Leaders of the ruthless Mexican Zetas cartel have been rumored to feed victims to lions and tigers kept in their properties, local media have reported.

Animals are also used in the drug trade as smugglers. Over the past couple of years, traffickers have tried to ship drugs inside frozen, cocaine-stuffed sharks, snakes fed with bags of cocaine and bags filled with transparent liquid cocaine inside containers shipping tropical fish, Reuter Cortes said.

As with drugs, Mexico is a main corridor for the illegal trafficking of animals to the United States. The country also has a healthy domestic demand for animals, with big cats found in some urban markets.

In July, Mexican authorities seized more than 5,500 illegal animals and plants during a nationwide three-day operation.

Not all exotic animals, however, are as lucky as Zambada's monkeys. Many animals found in drug cartel captivity or in private homes suffer from malnutrition or have been de-clawed or de-fanged, said Nucamendi.

"It's a symbol of status and power," he said. "It's a bizarre psychology for the people that keep these animals."

As he showed off the zoo's grounds on a recent afternoon, Nucamendi jumped over a barrier and knelt to greet Diego, a 2-year-old jaguar, who responded by pressing his face against the chain-link fence. Diego's former owners in Tijuana used to charge for pictures with him, Nucamendi said.

Elsewhere in the zoo was a 3-decade-old elephant seized from a circus because his owners didn't have the proper permits. Workers joke that the elephant is an illegal immigrant because he was sneaked from the U.S. to Mexico.

An 8-month-old male lion cub, also called Diego, arrived malnourished from private owners. Now fatter, Diego plays with two other lion cubs also on exhibit.

As for the squirrel monkeys, they'll be moved to a bigger exhibit being planned in a remodeling of the zoo.

Although some of the confiscated animals had finer housing before, their new homes offer genuine care from the people watching them.

"It's more important for us to guarantee the welfare of these animals than the criminal investigations," Nucamendi said. "That's our duty. We offer our bodies and souls for the welfare of these animals."

LOS ANGELES ? While many aspiring Emmy nominees were in hair and makeup preparing to talk to the press when the nominations were announced in July, Kate Winslet was givin' a chicken a lickin'.

"Nobody knows this, but I didn't really know that the nominations were coming out that day," the 35-year-old actress said by satellite from London last week while promoting her film "Contagion."

Winslet starred in the HBO miniseries "Mildred Pierce," based on the 1941 James M. Cain novel, which grabbed a top 21 Emmy bids.

"I was in England, and I was doing some really great daylong cookery classes with my best friend," Winslet said. "And my best friend and I, that particular day, we happened to be doing a butchery class. And, literally, as the email came through telling me that I had been nominated and that we had received 21 nominations overall ? I am not kidding you ? I was hacking up a chicken. Isn't that great? I just love that story."

Winslet is nominated for lead actress in a miniseries or movie for her title role in "Mildred Pierce."

"I have never been nominated for an Emmy before. I've never been to the ceremony before," she said. "And it's a wonderful way actually to reconnect with all the people who were involved with `Mildred' who I haven't seen in actually for over a year now. So, I'm really, really excited."

"`Mildred' was a very special part of last year for me and for all of us who were involved," she said. "And it was a really extraordinary group of people who all stuck together for 17 weeks of really hard slog. So, you know, all the hard work paying off in these nominations is just fantastic."

The 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sunday in Los Angeles and broadcast on Fox.

"Someone is making me a very lovely dress and I'm, I'm not very good at being prepared this far out," she said. "I usually go into full-on organizational preparation mode about 48 hours beforehand. And somehow it sort of all comes together. So I'm hoping that it will be all right. And I'm really looking forward to it."

Apple Removes 'Jew or Not Jew' App in France (NewsFactor)

Under pressure from critics who fear it may stoke anti-Semitism, Apple has removed from its French iTunes App Store a program that tells iPhone or iPad users whether a public personality is Jewish.

"The app violates local law and is no longer available in the app store in France, said Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. " Called "Juif ou pas Juif?" there, the app sold for 0.79 euro cents, or $1.08.

No Offense Intended

In France, it is illegal to collect or disclose a person's religious affiliation or ethnicity without the person's permission. Strict laws were enacted after World War II, when the Nazis deported and ultimately killed tens of thousands of Jews during their occupation of France.

Among those objecting to the app were CRIF, an umbrella group of Jewish organizations, France's Jewish Student Union and SOS Racisme, a social-justice group that offers support to immigrants and minorities.

The app, developed for the iPhone by Johann Levy and licensed this year by J Soft, remains available in the United States for $1.99, and carries a disclaimer that its goal is Jewish pride, not prejudice: "This app is only intended for fun....It simply shows how through hard work many Jews, often from immigrant families, have managed to achieve recognition."

In an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien, as reported by the Associated Press, Levy said: "I'm not a spokesman for all Jews, but as a Jew myself I know that in our community we often ask whether a such-and-such celebrity is Jewish or not. For me, there's nothing pejorative about saying that someone is Jewish or not. On the contrary, it's about being proud."

But according to The Wall Street Journal, Richard Prasquier, president of CRIF, said: "The fact is that this [app] could be used by others whose intentions are not as good. It is unacceptable and stigmatizes the Jewish people."

The app allows users to search public figures by name, category or movie or allows browsing of random people not widely known to be Jewish or the most popular people searched for through the app.

Levy told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency the app violated no laws because it relied on information already publicly available on the Internet.

Identifying public figures who are "members of the tribe," in commonly used parlance, has long been a fascination of Jews, leading to an October 1988 skit on the "Saturday Night Live" television show featuring a fictional game show, hosted by Tom Hanks, inviting contestants to guess on the Semitism of celebrities such as Penny Marshall (not Jewish). There is also a website, jewornotjew.com, offering information similar to Levy's app.

Extra Caution

But in France, where concerns about rising anti-Semitism have driven many Jews to leave the country, Jewish organizations aren't amused. A 2009 report by the Jewish Community Protection Service found that 832 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded in France in 2009, up 75 percent from the 474 incidents in 2008.

"Generally speaking, an app that draws on conventional wisdom and the hot topics of the day is a good app," said Rabbi Jason Miller, who writes a technology blog for The Jewish Week newspaper in New York. "However, caution must be taken when an app pushes the boundaries of good taste."

While the app in question is clearly not meant to be anti-Semitic, the rabbi said, "in France they are more cautious on matters that could potentially be construed as anti-Semitic or racist because of their history."

In June, Apple pulled another app that offended many Jewish organizations, called Third Intifada, which allowed users to coordinate anti-Israel protests and share articles. Critics, including an Israeli cabinet minister who contacted Apple personally, said the program incited violence against Israel.
