Filthy rooms at the University of Nairobi

Students and rats are competing for space in some of the hostels at the University of Nairobi.

Aside from being congested, the hostels are poorly lit and litter bins are left open creating a healthy ground to breed rats and cockroaches.

The most affected are the prefabricated timber hostels.

They are usually reserved for first year male students.

Besides hosting the rats and cockroaches, their door frames are termite-infested.

The students are not only reckoning with rodents but also power blackouts.

As a result they have illegally tapped electricity in order to cook in the rooms.

?We have asked our custodians to fix the sockets but so far nothing has been done,? said Charles Njoroge, a mathematics student.

He said they are forced to read at the Architecture Design and Drawing lecture hall at night during power blackouts.

The hall is usually full making it hard to do any meaningful reading. Unlike other hostels, the prefabs also face prolonged water shortages.

?At times, we feel as if no one cares about our welfare yet we have paid for the rooms and deserve better service,? said Samwel Njoka, a Land Economics student.

Students have blamed the Student Welfare Authority, which manages the hostels, for the sad state of affairs at Kenya?s premier university.
