Rabid Skunks in Fort Collins

Authorities are warning Fort Collins residents to make sure their outdoor pets are vaccinated.

There have been a total of 8 skunks that have tested positive for rabies in recent weeks.

Because skunks travel on the ground, they are more likely than bats, the traditional carrier, to spread the infection to other wildlife, pets, horses and even livestock, according to the Larimer County Department of Health.

If you should see a skunk or bat acting strangely contact the Larimer Humane Society at 226-3647, Ext 7. Authorities say that you should not approach these animals.

Wanderlei Silva calls Vitor Belfort disrespectful for breaking hand, pulling out of UFC 147 bout

If you have a fight scheduled with Wanderlei Silva, you need to give your bones very stern instructions not to break. If they do go against your wishes and snap in two, that's disrespect.

Vitor Belfort is currently coaching against Silva on the Brazilian version of "The Ultimate Fighter" and was slated to fight him at UFC 147. A broken hand forced Belfort out of their bout. UFC president Dana White said Belfort needs surgery. Though training injuries are part of the game in MMA, Silva called it "amateurism" via his Twitter account.

"(Fighting me) with one hand (laughs)? We are professionals. It's a great irresponsibility not to be careful on training, a great disrespect towards the fans. I'm really sad. I'm ready to knock you out, you have nowhere to run. This fight is happening. I guess you got scared of me. Nobody trains so hard that breaks his hand. We use the best equipments, gloves, bandages.

"If you were scared, you shouldn't have accepted it. If you really got it broken, it's amateurism and if you didn't, you're scared. In both scenarios, it was irresponsible of you towards the fans. Pardon the word, but I'm pissed with your amateurism. A main event on the biggest event of the world and the guy shows up like that".

Strong words from Silva, especially considering that he has pulled out of fights with injuries. In 2010, cracked ribs kept him from the co-main event of UFC 116 against Yoshihiro Akiyama.

Ease up, Wand. As you well know, injuries are part of a sport that asks its competitors to hit each other as hard as possible. Hands and ribs break. Ligaments tear. Life goes on. Belfort has been in 30 professional MMA bouts, so it's hard to believe he's scared, or that he broke his hand on purpose to get out of this fight. And if he could have, wouldn't he have done that to get out of getting kicked in the face by Anderson Silva?

How to get payday cash advances from finance institutions | gucinet.eu

Most financial institutions are now supplying payday loans so as to help folks as well as their customers to get out of the financial constraints especially during the overall economy. Banks have come to the conclusion that more people these days are in need of quick unsecured loans but most don?t qualify for business financing loans. Some will sell their present products while payday loans even though some may come with specialized items that will match the customer?s requirements. This results in competition regarding other loan company and this may lead to lower interest rates. Most people still find it convenient and easier to apply for the loans from other local financial institutions because they currently have a relationship with all the banks. Any local bank is aware of your credit score and how considerably you will be able to pay back the loan. You will probably get monetary advice from your consultants secured on whether or not there are other options that you can choose between.
However, you shouldn?t settle on your local bank due to the fact other financial institutions may give you lower interest rates. Just because it?s local lender it does not suggest that it will give you lower charges because most financial institutions will have profiles on job seekers who are looking for payday loans. By way of example, an individual who is required and has a well balanced source of income might be offered reduced interest rates than the usual self employed candidate. This is because the self employed applicant is often a higher risk than the one who will have funds the next payday. When you decide that bank you?re going to apply the money from, you ought to submit your application. Once the lender ascertains that you can to repay the money in a timely manner the money will be accepted. The bank could get in touch with an individual over the telephone, email or in man or woman to inform you from the approval.
Once the payday loans are usually approved, the amount of money that had been requested is then placed in the bank checking account. You can use the amount of money for whatever purposes you want and the lender will not comply with the usage. Before the money is deposited in to the checking balances you are required to sign a contract that you would be likely to honor. It is imperative to make sure that you understand almost all in the small print in order to be conscious of the consequences associated with defaulting. If there is whatever you do not recognize always inquire before you sign anything.

Sprint sets a best-before date for iDEN push-to-talk: June 30th, 2013

Motorola Titanium and XPRT for Sprint

Amidst all of Sprint's eagerness to phase out its iDEN network, the carrier hasn't given us a hard cutoff date to mark on our calendars until now. If you're still rocking that Motorola Titanium, you may have to drop your Nextel push-to-talk dreams as soon as June 30th, 2013, the earliest possible date Sprint says it could shut down the legacy service. Government customers will be getting a friendly paper reminder on June 1st of this year to make sure they're using CDMA Direct Connect phones like the Admiral well in advance. The switch-off will mark the end to a long and troubled chapter in the Sprint Nextel era, but if it helps bring about 800MHz LTE sooner, we're all for it.

Get Your Bottom Back into Your Bikini?and Keep It There! ? The ...

Get Your Bottom Back into Your Bikini?and Keep It?There!

It?s almost summer,?and I recently had a moment of panic: will I still fit into that bikini that?s lain crumpled in the back of my dresser drawer all winter long??I know I?m not the only one hoping the answer is ?yes.? But if it?s not, I know that I?m not looking for a quick-shrink kind of diet; I want the plan that will get me back in bikini shape, and keep me there (until I decide to go bonkers at the buffet this Christmas). A tested and approved plan that cares about weight maintenance as much about weight loss is Volumetrics. Originally pioneered over ten years ago by Dr. Barbara Rolls, it?s been updated with new science and new recipes in The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet. Here, Dr. Rolls explains many of the myths and misconceptions about weight loss and diet ?tricks.? Her partner in research and recipe developer, Mindy, chimes in with her own insights, too.

Can you gain weight on healthy food? How can eating healthy foods help you to lose weight?

?Barbara:? A calorie is a calorie when it comes to body weight, so if you eat more calories than your body needs ? even if those calories come from healthy foods such as fruits ? you will gain weight. However, you can lose weight by eating bigger portions of lower calorie density foods like vegetables in place of those that are more dense in calories.? When volunteers in my lab were served extra vegetables without any change in the amount of meat and grain on their plate, their meal calories didn?t change. Their total calories went down only when we substituted veggies for other foods on the plate, and we got an even bigger drop in calories when we decreased the calorie density of the vegetables by eliminating butter or sauce.

?Mindy: Many of our recipes show how to reengineer a dish by increasing the amount of low calorie density ingredients such as veggies and cutting back in other places. One of my favorites is the Fajita Breakfast Burrito, where we filled the burrito with lots of vegetables instead of breakfast meat and cheese.

?Is there anything wrong with sneaking veggies into foods?

?Barbara: Sneaking in vegetables gets a bad rap in some circles, but I think it?s a great strategy for not only adding more vegetables but also lowering calories. I think of it as recipe improvement. And research in my lab shows that you can sneak in a lot of vegetables without kids or adults knowing they?re there. When we hid four to five times the usual amount of veggies in entr?es served to preschoolers, the kids doubled their daily vegetable intake. Of course, kids need to learn about whole vegetables and parents need to keep offering them. In adults, sneaking four and a half times the usual amount of vegetables into recipes for carrot bread, macaroni and cheese, and chicken-rice casserole increased daily vegetable intake by 80 percent and helped reduce daily calorie intake by 360 calories.

?Mindy: To try this stealth approach at home, start with about 1/4 cup of extra vegetables or fruit for each serving in a recipe, for example, a cup of vegetables is a dish to serve four. Hide vegetables where they blend in easily and are not noticeable such as in mixed dishes, pastas, stews, and soups. Remember to cut down on ingredients that are calorie-dense in order to trim total calories.

?Does it matter whether you eat or drink your calories?

?Barbara: I suggest keeping drink calories in check. Beverages don?t affect hunger and fullness the same way that food does, and you could drink a lot of beverage calories without making a difference to how hungry you are. For example, if you have a large regular soft drink, are you full or do you still have room for food? Studies show that you will likely eat just as much food when you have the soda as when you don?t. The beverage calories add on to the calories from food.

?How can you lose weight if you eat a lot of meals at restaurants?

?Barbara: While people who eat out frequently eat more calories and tend to be heavier than people who have most of their meals at home, it is possible to make choices that can help you lose weight. It is essential to manage portion sizes. When we surveyed chefs, about three-quarters thought they serve regular-size portions. But they reported serving up to eight times as much meat and pasta as the government recommends and barely half a cup of vegetables, which is too small a portion. One of the smartest strategies is to pick a restaurant that has plenty of lower-calorie-density options such as soups, salads, and vegetable side dishes on the menu.

?Mindy: Don?t be afraid to ask questions before ordering. Find out how a dish is prepared and ask if it can be made in a more healthful way, for example, grilled with a small amount of butter or oil instead of pan-fried. Request that high-fat, high-calorie ingredients can be reduced or eliminated. Request smaller portions, or pack half your meal to bring home.

?Is it really possible to keep weight off?

?Barbara: Yes. It is important to make lasting changes in your diet and lifestyle rather than looking at weight loss as a short-term goal. Your daily meals should include plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes, lean protein, and fat-free dairy products. Limit extra calories from fat, sugar, and beverages. Incorporate daily physical activity to improve your health, help you feel more energetic, boost feelings of well-being, and reduce stress. Importantly, being active reinforces your commitment to a healthy lifestyle for maintaining your weight loss. Also maintain a record of your eating and activity; it?s one of the most important ways to improve your chances of success.

Florida Attorney Kantner answers Elder Care Question on ...

Question:??"My parents live in Melbourne Florida. My Dad has dementia and my mom is the primary caregiver. They live in their home. The house they live in is in a trust. They do not have a lot of money. My Dad is a vet with a 15% Hearing Disability.?

I have a 3 part question:??

  1. What are their options for care ? Especially for my Dad.
  2. Being a vet is my Dad able to get Veterans Aid and Assistance?
  3. Should they move to Assisted Living Facility or Retirement Community??

We just don?t know which way to go?- Thank You."

Answer:??There are various options available to your family for the future care of your father.? Your father can inquire into a home health care agency to help him stay at home by providing various functions and services to him depending upon his individual needs after being medically assessed.? The next level if that option is not available is an assisted living facility (ALF) where he may get assistance with some of his living activities but generally retains some level of independence.? Finally, a nursing home will provide comprehensive, full-time residential care services for those that require more advanced medical and physical assistance.?????

Because you note that your father is a Veteran, it would be advisable and worthwhile for you to explore VA Pension Benefits with an Elder Law attorney who is also a VA accredited attorney.? Most Veterans and their families know about the disability pension available through the VA, however very few Veterans know about The VA Improved Pension, which is not dependent upon any service connected injuries or disabilities.? This benefit was established to help Veterans and their spouses live out their lives with dignity by assisting them with their financial needs.? There are different programs, so by meeting with an accredited VA attorney you will be able to determine which programs for which you father may be eligible.? There are three types of Special Monthly Pensions (SMP) to offset the cost of necessary health care.? The three SMPs are ?Low Income Pension,? ?Housebound? benefits, and ?Aid and Attendance? benefits.?

There are qualification standards in order to be eligible for any of the three pension benefits, so it is not available to every Veteran.? In order to qualify, the Veteran must be disabled or over the age of 65 and in financial need, and has been discharged honorably, serving a minimum of 90 days, at least 1 day of which was during a period of war.? Financial need is determined by evaluating the net worth of the Veteran or surviving spouse, as well as the gross annual income. ?The income limits noted below are 2012 figures and are subject to change annually.?

To be eligible for the Low Income Pension, in addition to the above requirements, the Veteran and one dependent, for example, may have income of about $1,300.00 a month.? The Low Income Pension is similar to SSI benefits.?

Eligibility for the Housebound benefits program limits the Veteran and his/her dependent to monthly income of about $1,560.00.? This program is suited for the Veteran who is determined to be disabled and confined to home.? If the Veteran is over the age of 65, a disability rating is not required but a physician?s affidavit substantiating the Veteran?s condition will be required.?

The third program that is available, called Aid and Attendance, assists veterans and their surviving spouse who requires the aid and attendance of another person in order to avoid the daily hazards of their living environment.? The monthly income limit for this program is about $2,020.00.? Typically, the Veteran is living at home or in an assisted living environment.?

You should inquire whether or not your father is receiving VA Disability Compensation if the 15% hearing disability you note stemmed from an injury received while on active duty and have been administratively approved by Department of Veterans Affairs officials, commonly referred to as a Disability Rating.?

If Veterans benefits are not available or appropriate for your father?s situation, other benefits, such as the Medicaid Institutional Care Program (also a needs-based program), should also be explored to help them afford his long term care needs.

I hope that I have answered your questions and reiterate the importance of consulting with a qualified and experienced attorney to direct you and your family through this complicated set of rules and regulations.?

Tropical Storm Beryl makes landfall on Fla. coast

Tropical Storm Beryl has made landfall in northeastern Florida, bringing drenching rains and driving winds to the southeastern U.S. coast, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that the center of Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville Beach at around 12:10 a.m., with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph (113 kph). The hurricane center reported late Sunday that the weather system was in the process of making landfall.

"There are strong rain bands that are rotating around the center of the storm..." forecaster Al Sandrik said in an audio statement on the NHC website.

The weather system is expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday. It is expected to weaken as it moves inland and become a tropical depression by Monday night, and then moves out to sea.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement early Sunday evening.

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters predict the storm surge and tide will cause significant coastal flooding in northeastern Florida, Georgia and southern South Carolina.

The weather system could complicate holiday traffic on Monday. It wrecked some Memorial Day weekend plans on Sunday, causing shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and leading to the cancellation of some events.

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

However, many people seemed determined to make the best of the soggy forecast.

At Greyfield Inn, a 19th-century mansion and the only private inn on Cumberland Island, the rooms were nearly full Sunday and everyone was planning to stay put through the wet weather, said Dawn Drake, who answered the phone at the inn's office on the Florida coast.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said three people and a dog were rescued from a sinking recreational vehicle by crews in Charleston Harbor late Sunday morning.

"There were wave heights of roughly four feet, the waves started depositing water in the boat and the boat started to get overwhelmed, it started to sink," Petty Officer Christopher Evanson, a Coast Guard spokesman, told the Associated Press. "The Coast Guard was able to get on scene, get alongside the boat and disembark the passengers.

Evanson said the Guard is "trying to convince boaters and swimmers alike to stay away from the water. It's very dangerous right now and we're trying to stay vigilant and we're out there trying to ensure that everybody is safe.

In Jacksonville Beach, Fernando Sola said business was booming at his Happy Faces Ice Cream truck. A bus- full of tourists from South Carolina had stopped to buy some ice cream and watch the storm waters churn.

"There are actually more people than on a normal day. It's working out great," said Sola, taking a few moments away from scooping ice cream to people lined up in front of his truck.

Steady, heavy winds kicked up sand across the area, forcing onlookers to shield themselves with towels.

Jessica Smith and Chester Jaheeb decided to brave the waters despite many warnings for people to stay out. Jaheeb, who was born in India but lives in Jacksonville, said he had never experienced a tropical storm before.

"We were at a certain part that started pulling us out, like the rip current, so we decided to come to shore," said Smith, 17.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beach's American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps., said his lifeguards went body-surfing early Sunday to get acclimated with the surf conditions for what looked to be a long day. They also reviewed methods to determine where there might be riptides.

"They look for discoloration, the water moving paradoxically back to sea, and our lifeguards are trained to spot that, to keep people away from that, especially when the surf is this high. It makes those run-outs very dangerous. People can get sucked into those very fast, especially with the high surf and the high wind," he said.

Though the weather was calm earlier Sunday, Anderson's lifeguards began preparing other equipment in the morning. They packed sandbags in front of the entrances to the oceanfront Red Cross lifeguard station and pulled lifeguard stands off the beach.

As the winds picked up, officials hung two red flags, one warning of dangerous ocean conditions and the other notifying beachgoers that swimming was prohibited. But a lot of people ignored the warnings. By 3:30 p.m., Anderson said, lifeguards had made 150 "preventions," meaning lifeguards ordered 150 people out of the water, though no rescues were necessary.

One of the people ordered out the water was Christian Siciliano, 14, of Jacksonville Beach. The surfer said the waves were too rough for surfing so he, his brother and a friend decided to go boogey-boarding.

"We just went out to, like, mess around," Christian said. "It was really rough. I didn't make it out too far, about 10 feet."

He said the waves were so powerful it was difficult to paddle against them. Then lifeguards raced to the area and ordered him and the two other youths from the water.

Bars and restaurants along Jacksonville Beach's oceanside roads were enjoying booming business, with outside decks crowded with people listening to music, drinking and watching the weather. At Joe's Crab Shack, which has a deck facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" blasted from outside speakers.

Joe Murphy, a spokesman for the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island, Fla., said he was not seeing a flood of checkouts or people trying to get off the island. Outdoor dining had been moved inside and the hotel set up movies and family game activities, but the hotel had no plans to board up or move patio furniture inside.

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

On Tybee Island, a barrier island not far from Savannah, water off the beaches was closed for swimming Sunday. Tybee Island fire Chief C.L. Sasser said winds of up to 42 mph were creating "horrendous water currents." Only people with flotation devices strapped or tethered to their bodies were being allowed into the water, and they were being cautioned not to venture in farther than knee deep.

"Even if you're standing in waist-deep water, the current can sweep you out quickly," he said.

His ocean rescue team pulled a total of 48 people from the water on Saturday, he said, including about 27 that were considered to be in life-threatening conditions. One man who was sucked under the water was rescued by friends and onlookers and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A band of showers soaked the beaches late Sunday morning, causing crowds to thin, Sasser said. With alternating rainy and sunny weather forecast throughout the day, he said he expected the crowds on the sands to ebb and flow.

In South Carolina, Janice Keith with the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said Sunday that the office hadn't fielded any calls from concerned tourists.

In Beaufort County, emergency management deputy director David Zeoli said officials were continuing to monitor the storm and encourage people to have a plan in case conditions get worse.

Zeoli said winds had kicked up in the area that includes Hilton Head Island, a popular golf and beach destination. "It's just a wet day here," he said.

Egypt crowd attacks candidate's office

CAIRO (AP) ? Security officials and witnesses say several hundred people have ransacked the campaign headquarters of an Egyptian presidential candidate who was ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

The crowd attacked Ahmed Shafiq's Cairo office, smashing windows, tossing out campaign signs and tearing up posters. Then they set fire to the building. No one was hurt.

The attack comes just hours after the country's election commission announced Monday that Shafiq would face the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, in a June 16-17 runoff for the presidency.

Shafiq is opposed by the revolutionaries who helped toppled Mubarak last year, while many also fear the Brotherhood's religious rhetoric.

Protests also erupted in downtown Cairo and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood is scrambling to broaden its appeal to liberals, leftists and Christians after official results Monday showed that the Islamist group's candidate will face ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister in next month's runoff for president of Egypt.

To get the support it needs, the Brotherhood must tone down its religious rhetoric and offer far-reaching concessions, such as protecting the right to protest and strike, election-watchers said.

The Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, will go head-to-head against Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander, in the June 16-17 runoff. They were the top vote-getters in last week's first round of voting.

None of the 13 candidates had been expected to get the more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win outright. Still, Morsi's top finish was a surprisingly strong showing, because he was widely viewed as a weak candidate and because the Brotherhood's popularity has eroded recently because of a series of missteps.

Announcing the final results, election commission chief Farouq Sultan said that Morsi won close to 5.8 million votes, or almost 25 percent, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million votes, or nearly 24 percent. Finishing third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.8 million votes, or about 21 percent.

Several hundred Sabahi supporters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of last year's uprising, chanting slogans against the military, Morsi and Shafiq. Similar numbers gathered in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where some of the protesters tore down a large Shafiq poster.

Turnout among the country's 50 million registered voters was more than 46 percent, Sultan said.

Shafiq is widely viewed as an extension of the Mubarak regime, and the Morsi-Shafiq runoff is the most polarizing contest possible. In many ways, it mirrors the conflict between Mubarak, himself a career air force officer like Shafiq, and the Islamists he jailed and tortured throughout his years in power.

For Morsi to win, said Khaled Abdel-Hameed, one of the leaders of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak, he must make concrete concessions on specific issues.

"A protest boycott of the election is an option," said Abdel-Hameed. "If not, we want Morsi to adopt a package of legislation guaranteeing freedoms, labor union activity and the right to strike and protest."

The U.S.-educated Morsi appears willing to broaden his appeal but has offered few specifics.

He has vowed to be a "president for all Egyptians" ? a nod to minority Christians who voted overwhelmingly for Shafiq. He has pledged to work to realize the goals of the revolution, a promise designed to appease the pro-democracy youth groups behind the uprising that toppled Mubarak. And he has pledged a national unity government.

"We are certain that the remnants of Mubarak's regime and his gang, and those that belong to it that are trying to bring back the former regime will fall flat and will land in the garbage bin of history," he said.

Morsi's success, said Middle East expert Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution in Doha, Qatar, depends on how explicit and concrete the Brotherhood promises will be and whether the group can reassure significant segments of the population that view it as opportunist and hungry for power.

Pro-democracy activists say that the Brotherhood did not join their 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising until it became clear it had irreversible momentum and that it later abandoned them during their protests against military rule so as not to lose the goodwill of the generals who took over from Mubarak.

But the alternative ? Shafiq ? will be hard for them to accept.

"Leftists and liberals can hold their noses and vote for Morsi," Hamid said. "The Muslim Brotherhood is moving to the center and not everyone who did not vote for Morsi in the first round was actually voting against him."

The Brotherhood was empowered by the ouster of Mubarak 15 months ago, emerging as the nation's most dominant political force after spending the best part of nearly 60 years as an illegal, underground organization. It went on to win just under half of all seats in Parliament.

But it has failed to translate its dominance in the legislature into real political power, partly because the generals wield near-absolute authority, and also because of the perceived poor performance of its lawmakers.

Its credibility took a hit when it reversed an earlier decision not to field a candidate in the presidential election. Later, it attempted to pack a 100-member panel assigned to draft the constitution with its own lawmakers and other Islamists.

Khalail el-Anani, an expert on Islamic groups from Britain's Durham University, said the Brotherhood needs to change its thinking and cast aside the "persecuted" approach left over from years in the political wilderness.

"They don't realize that things have changed around them," he said. "In order for him to win, Morsi must reinvent himself as a nonpartisan politician."

Can Egypt's voters force candidates to compromise?

Khaled Elfiqi / EPA

The upcoming election showdown between Islamist Muslim Brotherhood stalwart Mohammed Morsi (L) and former Mubarak-era minister and military loyalist Ahmed Shafiq has been described as a "worst-case scenario" by analysts across the political spectrum. Is that a correct assessment?

By Ayman Mohyeldin , NBC News

ANALYSIS

CAIRO -- Former Mubarak-era minister and military loyalist Ahmed Shafiq and Islamist candidate and Muslim Brotherhood stalwart Mohammed Morsi will run against each other in Egypt?s upcoming presidential run-off election, officials announced on Monday.

Out of a field of five serious contenders who ranged from moderates to Islamists to secularists, the showdown between these two has already been described as a ?worst-case scenario? by analysts across the political spectrum.

Some analysts are already calling for voters to boycott the run-off elections scheduled for the middle of June, the argument being that by withholding their vote Egyptians can delegitimize the process that led to this outcome. Also, the argument goes, by boycotting the vote a citizen can deny the winning candidate a strong mandate to govern.

Other commentators are simply reducing the run-off vote to a choice between security, which is Shafiq?s mantra, and the imposition of Islamic law, Morsi?s pledge. ?

So is Egypt facing a depressing return to the Mubarak-era or a drastic plunge into the sharia law-era?

Not necessarily either of these scenarios.?

The results of the election, and the upcoming run-off, can be interpreted much less pessimistically.? Instead of the bleak assessments being peddled now, Egypt may instead be entering an era where compromise, coalition-building and power-sharing are part of the political lexicon.

Runoff could take Egypt's voters on one of two very different paths

There are a few facts that need to be considered when analyzing the recent vote.

Fact one: The majority of voters who went to the polls did not want Morsi or Shafiq to be president. The figures indicate Morsi garnered 24.4 percent and?Shafiq?23.3 percent. The rest of the candidates split the remaining 52.3 percent of the vote.

Simply put, more people wanted someone else to be president than they wanted either one of these two candidates.

Fact two: By garnering almost as many votes as the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Shafiq and the grassroots organization he built and mobilized over a few months has become a major cause of concern for the long-standing political force.?

Egypt's next president to be an Islamist or Mubarak's former premier?

Fact three: A majority of Egyptians have grown weary of Islamist politicians in an very short period of time. ?In fact, the majority voted for either staunchly secular candidates, Shafiq, Amr Moussa and Hamdeen Sabahi, or Aboul Fotoh, a moderate Islamist who promised not to mix religion and politics and also enjoyed the support of idealist secular youth.

In essence, this election has proved that while the Muslim Brotherhood may be the dominant force on Egypt?s streets, that doesn?t mean they are the most popular political force.

Voters lined up in Cairo to choose from five leading candidates: a socialist, two Islamists, and two with ties to former President Hosni Mubarak. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

While they are still considered the best-organized and funded political organization in Egypt, the recent results probably rattled the Muslim Brotherhood?s cage while helping them understand that they need coalitions too. In other words, the election results prove that there are forces capable of competing against the Muslim Brotherhood.

For 16 months, a debate has raged over the country?s political future.? Should it be a presidential or parliamentary system? Should it be an Islamist state? Secular? Capitalist? Socialist? The candidates tried to define themselves assuming these were the metrics the voters used.

But the results of the first round of voting showed that Egyptians en masse have yet to answer a central question about the country?s future: Do they accept change and the uncertainty and chaos it brings, or will they choose stability and the stagnation it breeds?

For the past year and four months, everything that has unfolded in this country can be seen through this prism ? a choice between change or stability.

Egypt's next president to be an Islamist or Mubarak's former premier?

From deadly street protests, to military trials, to parliamentary elections -- every time Egypt?s revolutionary movements have tried to shove the country towards radical change, forces just as eager to slow the pace of change have pushed it back from the edge.

NBC's Richard Engel spoke with former President Jimmy Carter to talk about Egypt's elections and the country's future. The Carter Center has been in Egypt monitoring the presidential elections.

So, as people call for change, just as many have overcome their apathy and said "not so fast."

When the change appears to lean in favor of the more powerful Islamist parties, it becomes more palpable for many to slow change down.

And with around 48 percent of voters now behind Morsi or Shafiq, 52 percent are now up for grabs. So what is clear is that for Morsi or Shafiq to win the presidency, they will have to win the hearts and minds of the remaining voters. ?

Now the questions is ? what can the two candidates do to secure this group?s support?

In Egypt's elections, politics is a new family affair

For Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, the message from the electorate is clear: The Brotherhood is beatable, Egyptians are tired of the Islamists? meteoric power grab, and want to see the MB reach across the political divide and move to the center. ?Morsi?s Islamist base of support is not enough to win the elections so he must moderate his party?s policies to win the support of cautious and skeptical revolutionaries, many of whom are liberal and likely secular, but nonetheless pro-revolutionary and pro-change.

In contrast, Mubarak?s last prime minister Shafiq,?has tapped into a core of the population who wants stability and is more afraid of Islamist politicians than of a return to Mubarak-era policies and practices.

And Shafiq can?t win the Presidency without recognizing that the new balance of power depends on the young, who are overwhelmingly pro-revolutionary, either as Islamists or secularists.

Shafiq played the fear of uncertainty card well in the first round, but he will have to show voters that he can deliver reforms, change and democracy as well as security and stability. In other words, Shafiq?s core of staunchly secularist and anti-change, pro-stability loyalists are not enough to win the final round of elections.

So the core supporters of these two camps are not enough to win them either an all-out majority, which leaves a central question: Which candidate can overcome his shortcomings better?

Will Shafiq show undecided voters that he will bring reforms, security and democracy? Can Morsi convince voters that the Muslim Brotherhood will commit to a civil secular pluralistic state?

The candidates will have a month to sell themselves to the voters -- and the voters will have a month to decide just how they envision Egypt?s revolution playing out.

Is your couch giving you cancer?

(NaturalNews) You may not be aware of it, but hidden in your clothing, furniture and even electronics are toxic flame retardant chemicals that are increasingly being linked to neurological damage, endocrine disruption and cancer. And in a fascinating investigative series, Chicago Tribune reporters uncover the dirty secrets behind why these toxic chemicals continue to be used in consumer products -- despite their extreme toxicity -- and what you can do to help avoid them.

The history of flame retardant chemicals, which allegedly protect consumer goods against catching fire, begins with the tobacco industry. When pressed several decades ago to develop fire-safe cigarettes to curb the growing problem of cigarette-related house fires, tobacco companies instead came up with the idea of pushing for flame-retardant furniture as a way to deflect focus away from the dangers posed by their own products.

From there, the situation snowballed into one where chemical companies eventually began lobbying for laws that required the use of flame retardant chemicals in furniture, including in nursing pillows, blankets, bedding and other materials to which developing babies are routinely exposed. And today, most conventional consumer products that even remotely risk going up in flames contain one or more flame retardant chemicals.

Part of the Tribune investigation includes details about how flame retardant chemicals do not even work as claimed. Besides burning at the same rate as non-treated furniture in tests, flame retardant furniture tends to shed these toxic chemicals as it ages, where these chemicals end up accumulating throughout the house and in the air, and eventually in the bodies of those exposed to them.

"What both the consumer products safety commission and the underwriters' laboratories have found is in using the typical flame retardant chemicals in the actual foam, the foam cushions in chairs, they don't provide any meaningful difference. They don't give you any meaningful protection," says Michael Hawthorne, a Tribune reporter.

"Some of the tests that the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) did, they lit two chairs on fire. The only thing that was different about the two chairs is one had regular foam, and one had foam treated with a flame retardant chemical [...] after four minutes, both chairs were fully on fire. Meanwhile, this chemical that was supposed to be safely locked inside the foam cushions is showing up all over the planet."

The Tribune expose goes into great detail as to how the so-called Citizens for Fire Safety group, which is controlled by the flame retardant chemical industry, has blocked all efforts at removing flame retardant chemicals from furniture. It also explains how the industry has paid doctors to defend the use of flame retardant chemicals in spite of their known dangers.

So what can you do to protect you and your family from flame retardant chemicals? Heather Stapleton, an environmental chemist at Duke University, says buying organic clothing and bedding materials for her children was crucial to reducing her family's exposure, as was removing all carpeting from her home and replacing it with hardwood flooring and other solid-surface materials.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) also recommends seeking out household products, including furniture, that are specifically made without the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and brominated fire retardants (BFRs), whenever possible.
