DNA fails to link ?In Cold Blood? killers to Florida case

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. ? A cold case in Florida did not get a breath of life that investigators were hoping for. DNA that was extracted from Richard Hickock and Perry Smith provided partial DNA profiles that did not match the suspected DNA profile found on Christine Walker?s underwear, according to a press briefing from the Sarasota County Sheriff?s Office released on Tuesday.

The failed link leaves investigators at an impasse to tie Hickock and Smith, who exacted the quadruple murder of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kan. in 1959, to a similar quadruple murder of the Walker family in Florida. The Walker family murder happened a month after the Clutters were killed.

The sheriff?s office did mention that there is still some uncertainty, as DNA from both the crime scene and Smith and Hickock included degraded samples. Furthermore, the samples may have been contaminated due to handling and years of storage.

The sheriff?s office concluded that DNA testing seems unlikely to provide conclusive evidence but that Hickock and Smith remain the most viable suspects. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant in December of 2012 and exhumed Hickock?s and Smith?s bodies to obtain the DNA samples that investigators desired.
