Coach speaks of murdered Collier teen's home life

The home life of a murdered Collier County teen and his mother was described as 'hell' by those who knew the teen closely.

If he wasn't at school, the soccer field was where you would find 18-year-old Joseph Suazo.

Joseph's soccer coach Jose Sandoval said, "he was always at the field ready to teach the kids."

Joseph wasn't just a player but a mentor - teaching 12 and 15-year-olds to follow their dreams.

Two days after his murder, Joseph's coach, Jose Sandoval revealed a hidden secret.

"He ware really afraid to go home, so he would spend most of the night here running," said Sandoval.

Sandoval said Joseph was afraid of his father, Jose Suazo, the man who would later be charged with killing Joseph and his mother.

"One time he talked to me about his dad coming to this park and had a gun pointed at him, telling him to get in the car or else he was going to shoot him onsite," said Sandoval.

The night before his murder, Sandoval said he and Joseph sat on the field and talked about coming up with an escape plan for how he and his mom would get out of the hell that went on inside his house.

"I was waiting for his call the next day until this happened. I was a day too late to help him," said Sandoval.

All coach Sandoval could do was take comfort in knowing Joseph is in a better place.

"He now found the peace he was always searching for," said Sandoval.

Saturday, all the kids on Joseph's old soccer field were playing in his honor; raising money to help get his and his mother's bodies to their final resting place in their native Honduras.
