What's Next: Matte in a Can

?

Automotive style trends can form fascinating arcs.?

?

Remember when Gymkhana impresario Ken Block's 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG was slathered in what was reported to be an $80,000 matte black paint job? Carmakers like BMW have since offered far lower priced light-absorbing possibilities, so it was only a matter of time before the aftermarket responded with an even more affordable alternative.

?

The latest (and most reversible) of the trend involves a company called Dip Your Car, which touts spray-on matte paints. The finishes are recommended for 4 to 5 coat applications, and can cover everything from paint to wheels to badges. When you're tired of the matte look, the finish peels off almost as easily as the Lamborghini Countach's white paint in the opening of Cannonball Run II. At least this way, you won't feel too silly when the trend finally runs out of steam...
