The Philadelphia Phillies streak from the cellar to first place among Pennsylvania baseball fans, topping the Pittsburgh Pirates 48 - 25 percent in Quinnipiac University's annual Pennsylvania Baseball Poll released today.

The New York Yankees capture the hearts of 8 percent of Keystone State fans, followed by the Baltimore Orioles with 3 percent and the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox, with 2 percent each, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. A total of 53 percent of Pennsylvania adults, including 62 percent of men and 45 percent of women, are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball. Among these fans, the Phillies rule in the northeast and southeast corners of the state, and of course the City of Brotherly Love, where 96 percent of fans back the hometown favorites. The Pirates are number one in the northwest and southwest corners of the state and claim the loyalty of 78 percent of fans in Allegheny County. Central Pennsylvania goes to the Phillies 38 - 19 percent. "The Phillies are having trouble in the National League East, but they are still number one among Keystone State fans," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Now, if Howard, Utley and Halladay can get healthy..." From June 5 - 10, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,129 adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.
