BANK LAWSUIT-TREASURER

SC treasurer defends $9M payout to 2 attorneys

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Treasurer Curtis Loftis is defending the controversial fees paid to two attorneys who represented his office in a settlement with the Bank of New York.

Loftis told the Retirement System Investment Commission on Thursday the $9 million payout did not take away from what went into retirees' pension fund because he negotiated it separately.

It marked the first time Loftis has publicly addressed the fees in any detail.

The treasurer's office sued the bank in January 2011, accusing it of losing $200 million in retirees' money through bad investments. After a partial recovery, the loss stood at $120 million. Under the settlement, the bank credited $25 million to the state's investment accounts.

Loftis says he pounded the negotiating table to get his attorneys as much money as possible.

ULTRASOUND CONFERENCE

USC hosts 500 international ultrasound experts

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina is hosting more than 500 experts from 20 countries at an international conference on ultrasounds in medical education.

University spokesman Jeff Stensland says the conference opens Friday and runs through Sunday at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Stensland says advances in medical technology allow ultrasounds to be used for many more issues than pregnancies.

They are used around the world to diagnose broken bones and damaged organs. Now that some ultrasound devices are so small they may fit in the palm of the hand, they are used to diagnose problems in the world's most remote regions.

Stensland says experts from Brazil, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, India, China and South Korea are coming to the event.

DEPUTIES-SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Richland deputies helping out Special Olympics

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Richland County deputies have been working this week to help raise money for Special Olympics South Carolina.

Sheriff Leon Lott says his department is wrapping up "Cops on Top of Doughnut Shops" on Friday.

For three days and nights, Richland County deputies have been collecting donations at four Krispy Kreme stores in the Columbia area.

All proceeds benefit Special Olympics South Carolina.

GULLAH GEECHEE BANNER

Banners to help promote Gullah Geechee Corridor

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor will be displaying banners at federal sites in four states to promote interest in the culture of slave descendants of the sea islands of the Southeast.

The commission on Thursday released a photo of the banners that will appear beginning next month at National Park Service sites and U.S. Fish and Wildlife sites. The commission will also have new brochures on the corridor available.

The commission is working to preserve and promote the culture, known as Gullah in the Carolinas and Geechee in Georgia and Florida, which has survived for decades because of the isolation of the area's sea islands. Now, that culture is threatened by rapid coastal development.

A 272-page corridor management plan was approved by the Department of the Interior in May.

GOLF COURSE-METH LAB

Possible meth lab found by Greenville golf course

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Greenville County deputies say paramedics had to treat several people after the ingredients needed to make methamphetamine were found on a Greenville golf course.

Authorities say someone at Donaldson Center Golf Course found several buckets in the woods by the links around 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators say the buckets were brought back to the clubhouse and opened, and the odor from them made several people sick. Deputies say paramedics were called, but didn't release the conditions of those sickened. The clubhouse was evacuated until the chemicals could be cleaned up.

Deputies say the chemicals in the buckets are used to make meth and they are investigating.
