Authorities are warning Fort Collins residents to make sure their outdoor pets are vaccinated.

There have been a total of 8 skunks that have tested positive for rabies in recent weeks.

Because skunks travel on the ground, they are more likely than bats, the traditional carrier, to spread the infection to other wildlife, pets, horses and even livestock, according to the Larimer County Department of Health.

If you should see a skunk or bat acting strangely contact the Larimer Humane Society at 226-3647, Ext 7. Authorities say that you should not approach these animals.
