Apple facing new lawsuit over iPhone 5 call forwarding patent

Patent 511

Patent 511

Apple has been caught up in multiple lawsuits for years. The most well known patent dispute involving the Cupertino tech giant is the ongoing court battle against rival manufacturer, Samsung. However, today, another company has decided to take on the iPhone maker in court.

Bluebonnet Telecommunications, a Texas based telecommunications company, has filed a suit against Apple for patent infringement for the new call forwarding feature present on the iPhone 5.?The disputed patent (U.S. patent 5,485,511)?covers??method and apparatus for determining the telephony features assigned to a telephone.? The company claims that Apple has been infringing upon this patent for years. ?Apple ? offered for sale products and/or systems (including at least the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5) that infringed one or more claims of the 511 patent.?

In addition to claiming that the iPhone 4S and 5 violate the patent, Bluebonnet also claims that Apple has encouraged its users to violate the patent because the company encourages the use of features that violate the patent. The suit claims that Apple?s call forwarding system violates this patent, but does not go into many specifics regarding how the features go against the patent.

What do you think about Bluebonnet?s decision to sue Apple? Do you think that companies should be so protective over their broadly described patents, or should there be less litigation involved in the tech world? Let us know in the comments section.
