Apple Said To Plan Smaller iPad To Vie With Google Nexus

Bloomberg:

Apple Inc. (AAPL) plans to debut a smaller, cheaper iPad by year-end, two people with knowledge of the plans said, to help maintain dominance of the tablet market as Google Inc. (GOOG) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) prepare competing handheld devices.

Line messaging and VoIP app adds 'timeline' and 'home' features, throws in new platform for app integration

Line messaging and VoIP app adds 'Timeline' and 'Home' features, throws in new platform for app integration

With now over 45 million users, while you may not use Line yourself, someone you know (or at least someone they know) probably does. The Asia-centric Skype rival has decided to roll-out some extra functionality and is looking to go a few rounds with even bigger competition. 'Home' offers up a base for sharing photos and other content, as well as your own status updates, while the 'timeline' feature will throw together a familiar-sounding chronological breakdown of your latest adventures to show your friends, adding in the ability to comment on each other's posts. Its 'Line channel' sounds even more nebulous and aims to use the existing app as a foundation for integrating and linking to yet more programs and services. The screenshots hint at camera, gaming and (yes) horoscope integration, while Line is gearing up for both HTML5 and native applications. Hit up the company's notions on a heavily connected messaging service in two servings of press release, right after the break.

Dan Aykroyd Insists He's Still Working on Ghostbusters 3

ghostbusters 3 new writers bill murray

The screenplay for Ghostbusters 3 has been as much a source for rumor and wild speculation as the entire project, over the years. Writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (Year One, Bad Teacher) have long been credited for the current draft and, depending on who you believe, franchise scribes/stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis may have done a rewrite (which failed to win Bill Murray?s approval).

It seemed the point of no return had been reached when, earlier this year, Aykroyd announced that Murray is out for a third Ghostbusters movie (should it ever happen). The latter comedic actor has since hinted that he?s not. Fans have been given little reason to think much of either actor?s claims, though, as the belated threequel has supposedly been ?in suspended animation? for months.

Aykroyd recently made a stop in Amherst on a promotional tour for his popular Crystal Head Vodka and there the newbie sexagenarian announced (via WIVB) that a new ? as yet, unnamed ? writing staff is at work on the Ghostbusters 3 script. He went on to emphasize that ?It?s got to be perfect.?That?s the whole thing. There?s no point in doing it unless it?s perfect. So that?s what we?re up to now.?

The most heavily-rumored storyline for a third live-action Ghostbusters movie has been a passing-the-torch scenario, where?the original team of paranormal investigators (Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson) train a new generation of ghost catchers ? with Murray?s character, Dr. Peter Venkman, dying in the first act (or prior to the beginning of the film) and returning as a specter thereafter.

One has to wonder how the new writing staff will deviate from that setup, given?s Murray?s apparent lack of enthusiasm. There?s a possibility that the actor?s role could be significantly reduced, for that reason; given his non-committal status either way, though, it?s unlikely that Murray will be written out entirely (but not utterly inconceivable).

Bill Murray: Ghostbusters 3

Murray?s most recent comment about GB3 is, ?You just have to have a really good script, you know, it?s hard. I think, you know, we?ll try again.? That polite response is on the same level as Murray?s previous claim that Ghostbusters 3?remains ?a possibility.??In other words: the actor?s not completely against the venture, but he doesn?t exactly seem to have high hopes (a sentiment many fans surely share, at this juncture).

So, in summation: Ghostbusters 3 is once again slowly making progress down the production pipeline (creaking and groaning along the way). Whether or not it will break down somewhere, and end up being scrapped entirely ? that remains to be seen.

We?ll keep you updated on Ghostbusters 3 as more information is released.

Gotcha! Higgs find will kick off new era of knowledge

All the signs suggest that the world's most-wanted particle is finally preparing to show its face. An unmasking will open doors to a whole new level in our understanding of the universe ? and allow the origins of matter to be studied in exquisite detail.

Teams from the two main detectors at the Large Hadron Collider are due to announce the latest results in their search for the Higgs boson, the crucial but elusive final piece in the standard model of particle physics, at a hotly anticipated seminar at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, on 4 July.

But given the volume of data the LHC has now collected, a flurry of tantalising but incomplete leaks and the hype in advance of the seminar, there is every reason to believe this is it ? or very nearly. "Whether the Higgs exists or not, we will know this week," says Carlo Rubbia, a particle physicist and Nobel laureate.

Nabbing the Higgs would conclude half a century of arduous searching, and count among the greatest triumphs for theoretical physics.

Swimming through molasses

"Relief is one of many emotions that people will feel," says theorist and blogger Matt Strassler of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. "There will also be a sense of anticipation: now we get to start studying this thing."

The Higgs boson was proposed in 1964 as part of the standard model, which describes how particles and forces behave and interact. The model is one of the most successful in physics. One by one, every particle it predicts has showed itself at one detector or another ? except the Higgs.

That is troubling. According to the standard model, the Higgs boson is the smallest unit of an omnipresent Higgs field, assigned the role of giving other particles mass. Massless particles like photons slip through it as if the field isn't there, while massive ones slog like swimmers through molasses. Without the field, there could be no matter, or so the theory goes.

The rub is that the Higgs particle itself is subject to this mechanism, so physicists can't predict its mass. For the past 15 years, they have tried to produce the particle in various accelerators by smashing different particles together ? the idea is to shake the Higgs field and prompt its bosons to fall out. The boson itself would quickly decay into a shower of other particles: physicists search the debris for telltale shards.

Double data

Last December, the twin Higgs-hunting experiments at the LHC ? CMS and ATLAS ? reported shards suggesting a Higgs with a mass of around 125 gigaelectronvolts, but they were not statistically significant enough to claim a discovery. The convention is to declare victory when the statistical significance of a particle's signal is 5 sigma, meaning the chance of something else producing it is less than one in a million. December's signals were each about 2 sigma.

Since then, the LHC has collected a lot more data. In April it raised the energy at which it smashes protons together from 7 teraelectronvolts to 8 TeV, a world record. As a result, between 5 April and 15 June, the two experiments collected twice as much data as they did in all of 2011, enough in principle to declare the particle found, or just about, says Guido Tonelli, former head of CMS.

If the announcement is a Higgs discovery, scientists may crack open the champagne, but then they will roll up their sleeves. Finding the Higgs would be a momentous achievement ? but the particle is more of a tool than an end in itself.

"Scientists have a dialogue with nature. Nature has finally answered and now we get to ask new questions," says Frank Wilczek, a Nobel prize-winning physicist. "The best part about discovering the Higgs particle is it gives us a chance of studying the Higgs field," adds Strassler. That could lead to explanations for why the fundamental particles have the different masses they do.

Supersymmetric solution

In the simplest possible universe, physicists believe, all particles should have the same mass unless something ? perhaps the Higgs field, perhaps something else ? made it otherwise.

Even weirder, theory says particles should have masses close to that needed to collapse them into black holes ? but they clearly don't. This "hierarchy problem" of how to keep particles light, and distinct from each other, is one of the biggest holes in the standard model, but it's not the only one. The standard model also can't explain dark matter, thought to make up 85 per cent of the universe's matter, and it has nothing at all to say on the subject of gravity. Knowing the Higgs's mass should lead to a theory that includes these entities.

An existing candidate, supersymmetry, could solve all these problems in one go. The theory predicts that each standard model particle has a heavier superpartner to balance it out. The lightest of those unseen particles could be a candidate for dark matter.

Hurricanes sign Jordan Staal to 10-year, $60M deal

(AP) ? The Carolina Hurricanes have signed new center Jordan Staal to a 10-year contract extension.

The Hurricanes marked the start of the free agency period Sunday by announcing a long-term deal for the star player they acquired from Pittsburgh in a draft-day trade just over a week ago.

Staal will make $6 million per year under the deal, which begins with the 2013-14 season. He is due to make $4.5 million this season.

Staal has said he turned down a 10-year deal two weeks ago to stay in Pittsburgh, and that decision precipitated the trade to Carolina in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, defensive prospect Brian Dumoulin and the No. 8 pick in the draft.

General manager Jim Rutherford says Staal ? the younger brother of team captain Eric Staal ? "represents a cornerstone of our franchise for the long term."

The 23-year-old Staal had career highs with 25 assists and 50 points last season with the Penguins. He was coveted by the Hurricanes, who wanted to add a top-shelf forward to play alongside the older Staal.

Both Staals are natural centers, but coach Kirk Muller said earlier this week that he would experiment during preseason camp with having both of them on the ice at the same time.
