shaunspellman: Strike call of National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in construction sector

Negotiations on wage talks by National Union Mineworkers (NUM) have been failed due to which 90,000 members of NUM didn?t reported to work on Monday. According to the reports, mineworkers of South Africa, under the umbrella of NUM, asked for 60 percent pay rise three months before which leaded to negotiations between the NUM administration and South Africa?s government. The negotiations were failed which leaded to a strike call in whole region. Construction workers have down tools until their wages are increased to the staid level.

Lesiba Seshoka, spokes person of NUM, stated that due to the failed negotiations, members of the union resorted to a nationwide strike.

?The companies who cannot afford to pay workers what they are demanding. They are the same ones that have stolen money from the public,? says spokesperson Seshoka in a press briefing who insisted that employers are offering workers way below what they actually deserve claiming 13% wage increase for the current year and 14% for the next year, 2014.

He further added that they were part of agreement that robbed state worth millions during the 2010 world cup questioning that how they cannot afford it.

The unrest in mineworkers started when announcement of resting off more than 1000 workers was declared. Following this announcement, South Africa miners were forced to call strikes. Mining industry is one of the most important sectors of South Africa economy, has been in the scene since mid 2012, when sequence of protected work stoppages stopped construction throughout the country, though construction companies like Union construction machinery are working to resolve this issue but no substantial progress has been achieved up as yet.

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), affiliated with Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), raised the demand for 60 percent pay increase on May 17 which resulted in unstable situation for South Africa economy. The press release on May 17 stated that ??The union demands that surface workers should receive a minimum amount of R7000 ($750) and underground and opencast workers minimum should be set at R8000 ($850) per month.? For all other categories, the NUM has demanded 15-percent raises and also wants to increase the job categories at which workers are rated?

Due to effects of inflation and other expenses, the modest lifestyle of Construction workers is hard to maintain, says the General Secretary of NUM, Frans Baleni. He further added that wages were under severe strain and should be increased.

Other demands placed by NUM to the mine owners were providing workers with home, transportation allowance and insurance.

The negotiations, which started in June, failed due to which the strike was called off. Meanwhile union has also threatened strike in mining sector, following negotiations between Solidarity and Chamber of mines on salary increases in gold mining sectors which are scheduled to take place on Monday.

?The ball is in the court of owners, to come back to us with revised offer? Seshoka said.

The union has given mine owners until Saturday to take action for their demand of pay rise to 60 percent. Meanwhile the employers can afford between 7 ? 9 percent according to the current reports.
