A tabloid rumor that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were splitting spread like wildfire on Tuesday. Although the Smith's usually take a hard line approach against responding to rumors about their relationship, a statement was given that same day stating, "The rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false. We are still together, and our marriage is intact."
Spotlight on Marc Anthony
Soon, Jada's costar on "HawthorRNe," Marc Anthony, had been dragged into the mess with reports pointing to him as the cause. Marc, who recently separated from Jennifer Lopez, told People, "Enough is enough. There are families involved, children involved, friendships involved. This is NOT true."
Reporting Fail
The first Twitter response came from an unverified account falsely said to belong to Will Smith's eldest son, Trey Smith. The post read, "Did #WillandJada split? No they did NOT split! False information ... its not true RETWEET!!!" The account has since been suspended.
Access Hollywood reporter, Shaun Robinson, tweeted "No, Trey Smith's mom says he does NOT have a Twitter account." Several news outlets ran with the falsely attributed tweet, which could have been easily verified.
Jaden, Justin and 'One Less Lonely' Rumor
Will and Jada's youngest son Jaden (who in fact does have a Twitter account) posted the hashtag "#ItsAllLies."
By Wednesday night even Justin Bieber, a friend of Jaden, got involved with a tweet stating, "Will and Jada are one of the best couples ever. #FACT #real." The Biebs has a vested interest in seeing love prosper as he champions the cause for "One Less Lonely Girl," starting with his current girlfriend Selena Gomez.
Justin and his Disney darling are no strangers to breakup rumors. Recently they too were the target of unsubstantiated reports made by some random guy on a YouTube clip. The video, which has since gotten over a million views, claimed the couple broke up because Justin was texting his ex-girlfriend, Jasmine Villegas. No evidence was offered for the claims but that didn't stop anyone from repeating them.
Brangelina Sues Scandal Rag
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are also well versed in dealing with false news. The couple won a lawsuit last year against The News of the World. The British tabloid had reported the A-list celebs visited a divorce lawyer and were breaking up. The paper, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., was also recently under investigation for phone hacking. The scandal rag paid Brangelina an undisclosed amount which will be donated to the couple's Jolie-Pitt Foundation charity.
