Emergency medicine physicians work in hospital emergency rooms. Unlike other specialties of medicine, emergency physicians must be familiar with a large variety of health issues and procedures. After all, on any given day, the emergency physician may have to treat a man who is having a heart attack, a woman who is dealing with a risky birth, a child who is suffering from a severe asthma attack, or even a teenage who broke a bone.

An emergency medicine residency can take anywhere from two to four years to complete. During the residency, the physician alternates through a number of specialties in order to acquire the expected skill set of an emergency physician. They also spend a great deal of time in the actual emergency department. Emergency medicine residency programs are known to be very grueling. Many residents claim they are expected to work 100 hour work weeks!

After the residency program, an emergency physician is able to go out and find a job. However, some choose to move on to a fellowship, where more specialized knowledge can be obtained.

A career in emergency medicine has many advantages. This type of a physician works with a variety of concerns, and is never board. Additionally, emergency medicine physicians are not required to be on-call because a physician is always staffing the department.

On the other hand, emergency medicine physicians deal with a higher percentage of death and severe trauma than most other physicians do. And, while they are not on call, emergency doctors have sporadic schedules, one day working days, the next day working nights.
