Microsoft MVP Award #15 received

It?s hard to believe this is my 15th MVP Award in a row. Where does the time go?

Back when I was first awarded MVP it was for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, and I spent the vast majority of my time helping users impacted by kernel32.dll errors and other glitches caused most often by video driver incompatibilities, corrupt IE caches and activex incompatibilities.? Then ActiveX drive by downloads appeared, and malvertizements, and my focus changed from fixing problems with Internet Explorer itself to fighting problems caused by software using Internet Explorer as a conduit onto a user?s computer

How times have changed. IE is much more stable, I haven?t seen a kernel32.dll error in literally years, active-x incompatibilities are relatively rare, and drive-by downloads without some sort of user interaction are pretty much a thing of the past . Nowadays we fight social engineering and malvertizing more than anything and my MVP Award field has changed from Internet Explorer/Outlook Express to ?Consumer Security:Training?.? Internet Explorer is still used as a conduit to get bad stuff onto a user?s computer, yes, but social engineering is not browser dependent and users of all browsers are at risk.?

And Apple now advises Mac users to get antivirus protection.? Back when I started this gig it was always ?you don?t need antivirus on a Mac, there are no viruses? (a pity it wasn?t strictly true, but anyway?).? I do, however, miss those old Mac versus PC advertisements.

It?s been a pleasure, and a challenge, and I wonder where we will be in another 15 years time, and what we will be fighting
