Maryland vs Florida State Pick Against the Spread

fsu jameis winstonThe Maryland Terrapins have been mostly irrelevant the last four seasons, but their biggest opportunity to make 2013 something more notable comes this weekend when they meet ACC Atlantic Division rival Florida State in Tallahassee. Saturday?s showdown between the two ranked foes is scheduled to get underway at 12:00pm ET at Doak Campbell Stadium; it will be broadcast live on ESPN. Early College Football Odds from SportsBettingOnline.ag have the hosting Seminoles listed as a -16 pick against the spread favorite.

No. 25 Maryland Terrapins at No. 8 Florida State Seminoles (-16): Almost everyone expected this year?s Maryland squad to be improved, so their 4-0 start is impressive but not shocking. Another reason for the lack of surprise is the fact the Terrapins have yet to really play anyone. What has been noteworthy, though, is the manner in which they have dealt with their opposition. Maryland outscored Florida International and Old Dominion 90-20 and it rebounded from a sloppy 32-21 road win (three turnovers) over Connecticut by drubbing West Virginia 37-0 at Byrd Stadium.

Now Randy Edsall?s squad takes a big step up in competition and against a team that has had its number the last few seasons. The Terps have dropped their last three meetings with the Seminoles by an average score of 15.3 to 37.3. Despite Maryland?s record and seeming turnaround, the odds makers are expecting another lopsided affair on Saturday, and the reason has everything to do with the Florida State.

The Seminoles, in spite of losing a number of key players from last year?s squad to the NFL, look none the worse for wear. FSU is off to a 4-0 start as well and it has dispatched teams with even greater ease than Maryland. The ?Noles pounded Pittsburgh 41-13, Nevada 62-7, ?Bethune-Cookman 54-6, and Boston College 48-34.

Last week?s meeting with the Eagles may be some cause for concern, though. Boston College is not exactly known for its offense, but it produced 22 first downs and 397 yards in the spread covering loss to FSU. The Eagles also found success on the ground against the Seminoles, rushing for 200 yards on 45 carries (4.4 ypc). The Terrapins, who currently rank 24th in the nation in rush yards per game with a 227 average (Boston College is 78th with a 155 average), ought to do the same opposite Florida State?s 60th ranked run defense.

Power Ratings Projection: Florida State by 17.6 points.

Notable Trends: The Seminoles are 1-4 against the spread (3-2 straight up) in their last five games as a home favorite with a spread between 14 and 17.5 points. Maryland is 4-1 against the spread (0-5 straight up) in its last five games as a road dog against an ACC foe with a spread between 14 and 17.5 points.
