Wal-Mart launches initiatives to support women (AP)

NEW YORK ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, is launching measures Wednesday that it says will help out women around the world in the next five years.

The retailer said it will spend $20 billion over that period on goods and services from U.S. businesses owned by women. It also plans to double the amount it pays women-run suppliers overseas, though it didn't give a total.

The discounter also aims to offer training to sharpen the skills of 60,000 women working in factories that supply products to Wal-Mart and other merchants. And it plans to teach life skills ? from punctuality to financial literacy ? to 200,000 women overseas and to 200,000 low-income women in the U.S.

Wal-Mart also said it plans to work with its suppliers that have more than $1 billion in sales to increase the representation of women and members of minority groups by the end of 2016.

"We know this is important for our customers, and it will make for a stronger business," Leslie Dach, executive vice president of Wal-Mart, said during an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. He noted that over the past year, the company developed the plan with help from a number of government and non-governmental organizations and philanthropic groups including Care USA, a humanitarian organization that fights poverty.

Dach couldn't quantify how many people the initiatives could affect, but he said they could reach more than 1 million.

Wal-Mart, which is based in Bentonville, Ark., has placed an increasing focus on serving women. In 2009, it set up a women's council made of 20 female company leaders worldwide who offer guidance everything from training and development to promotions.

In 2004, a sex-bias lawsuit against Wal-Mart was given class action status on behalf of 1.6 million women. In June, the retailer scored a major victory when the Supreme Court blocked the lawsuit, saying there was not convincing proof of companywide pay or promotion discrimination at Wal-Mart.

The moves to support women also come as Wal-Mart is aggressively expanding internationally. In June it completed a $2.4 billion acquisition of Massmart in South Africa.

It also is seeking to influence its core customers: Most of the 200 million people who shop every week at Wal-Mart globally are women, and they control $20 trillion in annual consumer spending.

With Wal-Mart generating $418 billion in revenue last year and operating in more than 80 countries, the company's initiatives carry some clout.

"This is a game changer," said Helen Gayle, president and CEO of Care USA. "This is a large initiative. If Wal-Mart begins to change the way it does its practices, it can have a huge impact on other corporations and other retailers."

Care USA started working with Wal-Mart in 2009 in Bangladesh, India and other areas. In India, Care USA helped cashew farmers increase their yield and taught them how to sell to Wal-Mart.

Will Obama jobs bill force new debt ceiling fight? (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama's goal of winning a big enough increase in the U.S. debt limit to get him through the November 2012 election could be thwarted by his own job-creation proposal, budget experts said on Monday.

The $447 billion in new spending Obama wants to juice up a weak U.S. economy would have to be spent quickly if it is to be effective. That would immediately pile more debt onto annual budget deficits of over $1 trillion, even though the president has promised to pay for his program in full.

The problem is that he proposes paying for it over a much longer period. It would be a decade before the Treasury Department would collect enough additional revenues to recoup the stimulus money being spent.

"The irony of all this is that ... they may have to confront it (raising the debt limit) again soon because the deficit might be a great deal higher than we were anticipating," said Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan group pushing fiscal reforms.

The irony Bixby referred to is this:

During the bitter fight this summer over raising the U.S. debt ceiling, Obama held out for one major provision -- enough of a debt limit increase, at least $2.1 trillion, to keep Treasury Department borrowing humming along until after the November 2012 elections.

Currently, the federal government is borrowing an estimated $125 billion a month, or about $1.875 trillion between August, 2011 and November, 2012.

But with signs that the U.S. economy is slowing from previous projections, some congressional aides already were privately worrying that the hard-fought debt limit increase would not be enough to see the country through to 2013.

An additional $447 billion in spending could put borrowing over the top, budget specialists said.

The Obama administration disagreed.

"We don't foresee a need to increase the debt limit before December 2012 under current law or under the American Jobs Act," Treasury spokeswoman Colleen Murray said.

A SLUGGISH ECONOMY

In its most recent outlook, the Obama administration forecast this year's economic growth to be 1.7 percent, down from its February estimate of 2.7 percent.

Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP, which analyzes Treasury's financing trends, told Reuters, "It's probably a close call that could go either way" on whether a pre-election debt limit hike will be necessary.

"It certainly increases the odds that the Treasury would have to resort to evasive maneuvers before the election."

The Treasury Department was forced to use extraordinary funding measures while Congress and the White House negotiated the debt ceiling deal.

Republicans in Congress are criticizing major portions of Obama's jobs bill and his proposals for paying for it. That means enough of the $447 billion plan could end up on the cutting room floor. That could reduce the pressure for another debt limit increase.

Bixby and William Hoagland, a former high-ranking Republican Senate aide who specialized in budget issues, both speculated that Congress could take other steps to avoid an election year debt limit debate.

They said the "super committee" charged with finding at least $1.2 trillion in new government savings over the next 10 years could insert another debt limit increase into whatever deal it reaches by the end of this November.

"I'm sure there have been some discussions under the radar screen on that. It would really be an issue they'd have to confront," Bixby said.

The Real Estate Market we Face Today: Buy or sell any real estate ...

Today?s markets are anything but stable.? On July 21, of this year the Dow Jones Industrial closed at 12,724.? Today Sept 9, the market closed at 10,992 after a fall of 300 points today.? Due to the volatility we are finding in the in the markets there are a number of people that are looking to put their money to work in more ways than one.? Sure you can take your chances and invest in the stock market like every other person out there or just buy an annuity that will give you a steady stream of income, which can be a complicated purchase.?? Or you can invest in the real estate market that is just filled with more properties than anyone has ever seen. Because of the persistent presence of bank foreclosures, the real estate market has many amazing deals.?? This type of investment is not for the faint of heart, since your money may be tied up for months to years.?? There are a several ways you can invest in realMarket Volatility estate that will make you money.? The most recognizable way that people have made money was buying homes to flip in the short term.?? The other option is to hold them as rental properties for a few years while it is rented out for a steady stream of income.? If you are looking into flipping homes you need to have expert knowledge of the area to make sure you are buying it at a price that will make you money.? You also must consider the money needed to update the home so that it will sell quickly.? As a general rule the nicer the home looks compared to others on the market the faster it will sell.?? The goal in these types of investments is to buy and sell as many houses as you can. You need to find the right people who will help you achieve this goal such as local contractors and Realtors. They will be the key to helping you find the property, fixing it at the best price and then putting it back on the market.

Another option available to real estate investors is to purchase a real estate note that will produce a steady cash flow and a healthy annualized return on your investment.? There are no upgrades that need to be done, no plumbing repairs that are your responsibility to fix and no constant upkeep that needs to take place.? Purchasing a real estate note you enable yourself to invest your money and get a sizable annual return compared to the stock market and other strategies.

The simplicity of buying and creating seller financed notes is what I like most about this money making strategy.? You don?t need to sift through 200 pages of legal garble-gook like you do with an annuity.? You don?t have to rely on financial brokers to try to predict Volatilityfuture performance of companies in which no one has any control.? Instead, all you have to do to figure out how to make your money work is understand how a financial calculator works and incorporate a note professional, The Texas Note Company, and do a little bit of due diligence.? Your fallback is the asset of the underlying lien if the cash flow strategy does not go as planned you have the asset.? Although not desirable for most cash flow investors you can foreclose on the property and get you investment back.

Now is the PERFECT time to invest in real estate.? As long as banks continue to restrict traditional financing and the continued volatility in the markets that is a lot of money to be made and great deal to be found in real estate.

Robert E Young is the Founding Director of The Texas Note Company. He is a Real Estate Investor who puts real estate transactions together using proven seller financing strategies and techniques.? He purchases and brokers private real estate notes often enabling home sellers the ability to move on to the next transaction with the cash needed. Robert enjoys teaching and educating real estate minded people the advantages of Owner Financing and what it can bring to a real estate transaction while dispelling it?s myths.? When traditional financing methods fail to provide the benefits buyers and sellers are looking for, often it is seller financing to provide a solution.

Former Ukraine PM's trial halted for 2 weeks (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? The judge presiding over former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's trial unexpectedly postponed hearings Monday for a two-week period, following renewed pressure from the United States and the European Union.

Tymoshenko, 50, the former Soviet nation's top opposition figure, stands accused of abuse of office when signing a natural gas import contract with Russia in 2009. Prosecutors say she violated legal procedures when the deal was signed.

Judge Rodion Kireyev's decision to suspend hearings marks a contrast with how the trial has been rushed over the past two months, drawing complaints from Tymoshenko.

Tymoshenko, who was jailed during the trial early last month on charges of contempt of court, maintains her innocence. She says the trial has been orchestrated by President Viktor Yanukovych to keep her out of political life.

Although a deeply divisive figure in Ukraine, Tymoshenko retains a substantial following and was only narrowly defeated by Yanukovych in last year's presidential election.

The United States and the European Union have criticized the trial as politically motivated.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton together with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton sent Yanukovych a letter regarding the Tymoshenko trial Friday, according to an EU official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. He would not discuss the content of the letter and Yanukovych's office declined to comment.

The judge's handling of the trial has drawn vocal criticism from Tymoshenko supporters. Her lawyers said the hasty conduct of the trial denied them sufficient time to prepare for the case.

The trial was due to enter its final stage Monday with the prosecution and Tymoshenko's team presenting their closing arguments. Tymoshenko had said she expected a verdict to be passed this week.

She said Monday that postponement of the trial suggested the prosecution's case had run into trouble.

"This demonstrates that the case has fallen apart," Tymoshenko said in court.

Some experts have also speculated the trial may have been postponed to avoid embarrassment ahead of Yanukovych's trip to the United Nations General Assembly next week.

Should Children Specialize in One Sport? | Knowledge Base

Earlier, when we were growing up, it was it was just a small selection of sports that kids can choose to play. Today we have our parents' children with a range of activities for young people. The question is whether we let our children choose to be really good or have skills and rules of the various activities of other muscles during exercise to learn a sport?

My son plays football for nearly four years. He loves the sport and I am his mother, a part of something that is really good. He played for about eight months a year. In the remaining four months, however, decides how to play basketball and football. We believe it is important to "broaden their horizons," when I realized stereotypes and that different types of training, improved their skills in football.

It seems there is some merit to this philosophy. In an article written by Tim Alan Kauppinen and present in ConsumerHealthDigest.com there are potential risks associated with specialization in one sport at an early age. Kauppinen, has referred to as "Coach K" for over 20 years experience as an athlete and coach and has worked with athletes of all ages and abilities. There are four dangers of specialization, according to Coach K.

Injury, abuse of the body the same way several times during the year can often lead to injuries. Different sports use different parts of the body, which leads to improved athletic performance. Pediatricians agree that children should participate in a variety of physical activities.

Burn-out 1 day at the sports day for years, it can burn at an early age. Participation in sports provides relief from the "old, but you can keep the most popular sport interesting, challenging and fun.
College scholarship myths, in fact, only a small percentage of young athletes really deserve a scholarship. Find Contrary to popular belief, most college recruiters are the best all-around athlete, the coach said K.

Do not reach their full athletic potential, to a sporting activity for children at different skills that could benefit from its performance in his heart craft to develop. Speed, balance, mental focus, jumping, running in a different way in other sports, which is a better football player (in the case of my son) to stay, for example.

What do you think of sports specialization? Your child focus on one sport for most of the year? If he or she takes part in other activities, what are they? For more information about your child's athletic abilities, please visit http://i9sports. com

Dream Vacations

Article Directory :: Travel & Leisure Articles

Have you ever planned a vacation so good you were jealous of yourself for taking it? There are times in life (if you're lucky) when you quite literally have to pinch yourself to believe what's happening to you. These are known as dream vacations, so good, you can't believe that they are real. Examples include:

1. Yacht Holidays:

Yachts are boats on steroids. They are bigger, faster and certainly more luxurious. There are sleeping cabins, showers, TVs, full kitchen and dining areas and usually a full staff. Those lucky enough to spend time on a yacht will quickly adapt to the luxurious lifestyle. Days are spent tanning, swimming, water skiing, playing board games under shade sails, and being served food and drinks whenever it suits your fancy. Not to mention, that if aboard a yacht you will be travelling along the seas, lining some of the world's most beautiful coasts.

2. Flying in a private plane:

Private jets might be the most luxurious toys of all. Not only are the seats lined in gorgeous leather, the floors covered in soft carpet and the food as delicious as any fine dining restaurant in the world, but you have the pleasure of avoiding the lines, chaos, waiting time and hassle that are associated with air travel. Show up thirty minutes before your flight, give them a peak in your carry-on and hop aboard a cosy airborne living room.

3. Villa Rentals:

Don't own a villa? Well you have your pick of thousands around the world to rent, if it interests you. Renting a villa is a great way to spend vacation time, especially in the summer. Have a look around on the internet and you will quickly see that there are some absolutely gorgeous villas in the world, with amazing views, grounds, and houses. The more you're willing to spend the more you will get. Private chefs, nannies and cleaners are all available if you choose to have them.

4. Exclusivity:

Exclusivity usually doesn't come cheap. Whether you're staying in a private cabin at the top of a mountain or have access to the VIP room of L.A.'s hottest celebrity club, you usually need one of two things to have gotten there: cash or connections, and generally the two go hand in hand. Exclusivity is what many people aspire to have, it makes them feel special and taken care of and that's exactly what you'll be, taken care of.

When was the last time you had to pinch yourself?

5 Steps You Must Take to Protect Your Small Business Data from ...

As with most things in life, it?s easy to procrastinate, especially when it comes to preparing against?unforeseen?circumstances. ?According to Symantec?s 2011 Small Business Disaster Preparedness Survey, this is precisely the case with small business owners and their computers, technology systems and data. ?Symantec surveyed 1,288 small businesses and 552 customers of small businesses from 23 countries worldwide and found that 57% of the small businesses surveyed did not have a plan in place in case of disaster. ?Alarmingly, 52% of respondents didn?t think computer systems are critical to their business even though 65 percent of small businesses reside in regions that they consider?susceptible?to natural disasters.

While some small businesses are born out of disasters, what is the effect of a hurricane, flood, fire, cyber attack, power outage or even spilled coffee on existing SMBs? ?Predictably, the repercussions of not having a disaster recovery plan in place can be costly. ?An average SMB experienced a median of 6 outages per year at a cost of $12,500 per day. ?$75,000 is a chunk of change, but it gets worse. ?While the businesses are scrambling to assess and fix their own damage, their customers are affected financially at a cost of $10,000 per day. ?Out of frustration, 54% of customers have switched SMB vendors due to data loss and unreliable computer systems.

The good news is that much of the data loss, cost of outages and loss of customers can be avoided with careful planning. ?Symantec offers?5 Steps You Must Take to Protect Your Small Business Data from Disaster:

1) Don?t wait until it?s too late.

We?re all guilt of being lazy and procrastinating, but that?s precisely the point of disasters. ?They come out of nowhere. ?Didn?t expect that cup of coffee to spill and short-circuit your computer, did you? ?How about that heavy rainstorm that caused a flash flood in your first floor office or that fire in the server room after the AC broke down? ?Create a plan ahead of time, so that you?re ready when disaster strikes.

2) Protect information completely.

Create a backup of everything in multiple formats including: external hard drive, company network, off-site location and using cloud-based storage options. ?Additionally, protect against cyber attacks with real-time monitoring and?up-to-date security software.

3) Get employees involved.

Best practices are key to a streamlined process of data recovery. ?Train all employees on what to do when they accidentally delete an important file or some other disaster strikes.

4) Test frequently.

Remember the fire and tornado drills you used to practice in school? ?The same principle applies to disaster preparedness and recover testing. ?Practice makes perfect, so test everything repeatedly to make sure your safeguards are working properly.

5) Review your plan.

Review your disaster preparedness and recovery plan every quarter to make sure it is up-to-date and the plan is top of mind.
